FINALLY got my E8400 somewhat working!

Thread Starter
I just bought an E8400 from a guy. He got the chip in a trade and never installed it. The guy he got it from said it was only installed for 1 day.

The chip looks perfect, no marks from a heatsink or anything, even came in the original packaging!

Anyway, I can't get it to overclock AT ALL! It will only go into windows at 3.1 (3.0 is stock)

Is there something wrong with this chip? Or am I missing something? I am fairly experienced in overclocking, but this is my first 45nm.

Any help? Suggestions?

EDIT: I am running orthos now after a fresh OS install. 3,6 @ 1.24v stock cooler 51c load

Some things to try would be disabling SpeedStep, making sure the memory is in syncronous mode (1:1 divider), that voltages are not set to "auto", and that PCI clocks are locked so they don't scale with your FSB. Could you post the specs on your ram as well, it could be contributing to the problem.

I suppose it would help to know what volts you're trying to run at, although I'm sure you have up'd them enough to get a 100mhz OC going. If any OC on RAM (or timing tightening) or anything else go ahead and undo it. A solid NB overvolt could help (assuming, of course, you haven't pushed to limit already). Make sure you have latest mobo bios.

A few more specs would be needed for anyone to make a conclusive judgment on the quality of the chip.

LOL, the ram can do 1200 pretty easy. So thats not it. All the things you mentioned have been done.

The ram, just FYI is DDR2 800 4-4-4-12 1.8-1.9v Crucial ballistix Tracers, Lanfest edition. Totally bad ass

Gonna check for latest Bios. I already thought of that but I hate doing it. I have killed acouple mobo's with bad bios files

The ram is rated for 800 MHz at 4-4-4-12 timings? You probably need to loosen the timings, 1000MHz RAM would be ideal for OCing C2Ds with a 1333MHz FSB, but you should be able to get past 3.1GHz if you loosen the timings to say 5-5-5-12. Edit: Make sure you have a 1:1 memory divider, then you wont have to worry about loosening timings until you hit 3.6GHz, been up for too long, was doing the math wrong in my head.

Edit: Pretty sure that P35 mobos didn't have 45nm support out of the box, so if you haven't updated the BIOS this could be the problem. I know that my mobo was recognizing my E8400 as a 3GHz dual core Pentium 3 before I updated the BIOS, lol.
