GTX280 over heating problems.

Thread Starter
OK I just ordered one and after reading this long thread (yes from page 4 to 10) I'm a bit worried. I found this thread as it was in a review for the card. After searching around I found even more.

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...=114925&page=4

It's a good read for anyone getting one of these. I just hope and prey the one I get doesn't have this issue.

Eeek, well that sucks. I hope the 260 doesn't overheat so much.

I'm sure it's "an issue they will fix"

Nope, I have been Reading that same link you listed above.. and it seems that more and more people are having this problem.. today I bought a eVGA 260, brought it home, opened it up. and guess what. It's a 280 with a 260 sticker.. I **** you not. I was SOOO exited. I got a great card. I was all happy. threw it in my machine, made sure it really was the 280. it is. and then tried a game.. UH OH. within 4 seconds GRID got the GPU to 106 Degree's C and the card crashed. Same thing with Crysis but I got it to 108 before it crashes.. the card still puts out good looking graphics at that temp, no artifacts. but the fan starts stuttering up and down. and then it crashes.. for sure not good. I've been doing my reading. and now I've realized that the GTX 260 is a better and more safe bet choice for a videocard. the rate of GTX 280's bein RMA'd and returned right now is over 60%. thats a Failure IMO.. and the GTX 260 return rate is like less than 10%.

I was soo exited when I paid 279.00 for a GTX 260 to get home and find out it's a 280 with a 260 sticker on it.. yup. It's got the 260 sticker on the 280. lol.
Now I have to drive back to the store tomorrow and get a new one. Going back to what I originally wanted. the GTX 260. and I sure hope it works out.. if not. Then 4870 Here I come.. We will see. I'll post back tomorrow.

mines stay below 80c during any game... AND THATS TRI SLI!

I did add a fan in front of them but when I only had 2 running they ran much cooler! I dont doubt some may have a problem though, but I do have 2 xfx cards and one evga no problems with either.

You also have to think about it.

You have the room temp, Case temp, How many fans you have in the case and how good your air flow through the case is.

Good luck, I hope you do not have any problems.

Naa.. all this overheating is a pile of bull****.. i mean.. my card.. idles at around 45c.... and this is peak summertime in britain.. ambient room temp is around 27c..

100% fan gets me 42c idle.. and around a 60-65 peak during load (furmark)

50% fan gets me around 45-50 idle and peak i dont want to test.. but once i forget to load my 100% fan profile.. and a little while of crysis later i realised..

dived straight onto GPU-z and it told me 94c... so in game it must of been around 100c which is still within the GPU's threshold.. but obviously cooler is better and safer..

Aslong as your running 100% fan.. you wont see anything over 70 IMO

Obviously that clown in the other forum was running at around like 30% fan.. which i believe if i remember properly was the default setting before i modified everything in Nvidias control panel
