Some of it is future proofing. Some buy their PSU's with a thought to multi GPU setups. Some of us dont want to run our Psu's at 90+ % capacity.

This card is impressive for the price. if i had a crossfire board i would be running 2 of these things, no doubt.

but even with just 200W, max I ever pull from the wall is 190W. At ~80% efficiency that's only a DC load of 152W. Even if I added a second 3870, I'd still be under 300W.

And you'd have to buy a new PSU right?

I can drop 2 4870's in my box and not have to worry about gettting another PSU ( probably even get an 48**x2 and a 4850 for trifire if i could manage enough 6/8 pin connectors), And still run 3 hdd, 8 fans, and an overclocked quad. and I dont need to buy another PSU.

Such a scenario again would be FAR from unprecedented in recent generations betwixt these two competitors.

Bottom line, for $299, this is an amazing card. If ATI can get these out en masse, it'll be awesome, because nvidia will have no choice but to drop prices as well. Were the two cards the same price, personally, despite these results, I'd be inclined to go with the 260 myself. Again, I think it's a more powerful card and I'm betting it'll be an overclocking monster.
Since the 260 is such large GPU fabbed on a bigger 65nm process, I don't think the OC on it is going to be able to beat the OC of the HD4870. Maybe I'll be proven wrong though.....

She must be doing it wrong, I got my GTX280's core overclocked to 705mhz (105mhz over stock) with stock cooling. Kingpin got around 950mhz core with LN2 and Tri-SLI GTX280s.

The 4870 Will be a big monster for sure. Plus it will probably cost less the Nvidia.

expect some very fast price drops for the GTX 280/260. All we need now is a 4870/4850 crossfire benchmarks against Nvidia's counterparts in SLI. take ATI the max with some decent CrossfireX drivers.

Classic David vs. Goliath, kinda odd, yet sad that the GT200 is twice the size as the rv770XT but yet power comsumption and performance is increadibly simillar. Looks like Nvidia has learned their lesson.
