in my trade, i c where all the markups on material and labor come from (and continue after i'm done with the project) and i can't c it costing anywhere close 2 half as much as they're retailing 4.
I'd say they're only making a killing if people are buying them up. Cards sitting on shelves don't generate income.

Argh. Damn your AOLspeak. Why can't you put in the effort to actually type out the words? I mean, you already put in commas which show you're capable of looking intelligent. Why stray from that path?

Did you factor in Half a billion in R&D plus the price of the silicon and 40% yields? I bet they are hardly making a profit right now if they are.

Try this read and it will clear up things alittle. Nvidia and the vendors are not making a killing off selling gt200 cards right now. If they improve the yeilds and manfacturing they might. But that takes time. http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...sucessor-tapes

Yeah pretty amazing considering all 3 cards are using immature drivers.

Expecting a mid-range card to beat a top-end card is unrealistic. Won't happen.

Seeing a mid-range card slightly beat another mid-range card, that is to be expected.

I'm waiting for Legit Reviews and Tom's Hardware to do a full review on the ATI 4870, and hopefully we will see results vs the GX2.

It would be cool to see a "GX2 280".

Aye! I'm finding it VERY difficult to wait for the 4870X2. This heavenly competition is the reason I went for a budget 8800GT and haven't upgraded. I've been waiting for this fight for months!

2.) they also factored n the "n00b" factor, which means they can keep jacking up the price at every level cuz they made a new chip that runs slightly better than the same chip from 3 months back... and ppl will pay it cuz they're... well, n00bs

and c.) that's the problem, nvidia just wants 2 get a new revision out as soon as possible, so they spend too much money on things like production costs just 2 have a gpu that's slightly faster than the competition. if they were 2 sit back and say, "hey, 40% yields? no way we can sell our cards competitively producing such piss poor numbers... let's rethink this."

and if the INQ is correct, $150 just 4 the die area is just crazy. with the rv770 die being about 2/3's the size of the gt200, well, let's get hypothetical...

if the die area cost amd say $100 and they're selling 4 $300, i'm just gonna throw numbers out and say another $100 4 all the r&d and other crapola and another $100 4 the markups. now with the nvidia, u have $150 per die and selling for ~$650... that's what, $300 for r&d and and lack of planning plus another $200 4 markups?

yeah, that adds up
