Final Thoughts

While in the applications we tested there hasn’t been any notable gains with the HD 3870 X2 actually taking a hit in a few cases, the new drivers generally seem to be increasing performance in the promised sections for people.

What’s really interesting about this driver is if you take the time to read the performance improvements, they all revolve around DX10 improvements. It will be interesting to see if this is something we begin to see more of over the coming months; Vista has really picked up momentum in the gamers market with most people jumping onboard.

Considering how hard at work AMD has been on the new HD 4800 series, it’s surprising to see any real gains from this month’s driver, but they’ve managed to do it. No doubt over the coming months AMDs focus will begin to move to the HD 4800 series of cards in a continuing effort to compete against NVIDIA

kinda offtopic: i HATE that both Ati & nVidia dont focus on the old series so much after a new series is out. When lets say the 8 series came out...the drivers did not evolve so much for 7 series...bringing almost NO improvements.OK i know we have to move on but some people don't aford a new graphics card every 6months so my guess is that both ati and nvidia should focus on the old series too-not those very old.For example: nvidia should improve 8series drivers even if the 9 series is out and even the 2x0series.Ati should keep gettin those 3k series drivers better...it seems stupid to me: i got my 8600 when 9series were about to go out...of course i cant buy a new card soon and since i have it the drivers has done something to my performance but only the 169 version.since then nothing...now why is that?since i have a mediocre video card i dont deserve to squeeze more out of it?the only way to get better performance MUST be to buy a new one??...well some just cant keep up with tech like that -.- ...my 2 cents

By the time the 8 series was released nvidia had squeezed almost every bit of performance out of their 7 series optimizations, they had been out for quite some time. I wouldn't expect anything significant in the way of driver optimizations after a extended period of time, unless of course they are deliberately holding back for some odd reason, which I have witnessed a couple of times. However with modern games, which are continually evolving, many still have a long way to go before the optimizations reach their pinnacle. Its equally up to developers to integrate such performance improvments into game patches.

Try out non-official drivers like Omega Drivers especially with older cards.

Yeah It is crap that the midrange GPU's miss out on a lot of things. I'm Inclined to believe that It is partly due to the propaganda created by enthusiast segment products that seem to trickle down through to the midrange and entry level segments. Most people(gamers Included) dont even bother to update their graphics card drivers!! Unless they have a distinct problem with them of course. A few of my friends who I would class as pretty regular gamers, are still using 6 month old drivers, or even the drivers that came with their cards. It seems that only the enthusiasts really care about getting that little bit more performance from a updated driver. Then again most people are too ignorant to even begin to understand this....

One thing that could be taken into account is image quality. If IQ improves (does often), then I would be able to accept that the performance doesn't increase much......even decrease slightly.

well reading review of 8.6 just confirms what i figured out on my own system...

8.6 is DEF reducing performance in the FPS area!
and the picture graphs show this!
so how can the final conclusion be that 8.6 is overal an improvement when the evidence show otherwise...

but from my own tests...the 8.5 drivers are better...(for my 3870 X2 anyways)
just my £1 in the jar...
