Opteron 180 OC

Thread Starter
Is this about as good as i am going to get or is there any other tricks people can supply?

CPU - 2900 MHz (ish)
HT - 970 MHz (ish)
DRAM Freq - 196 (ish)

PCI = 120 MHz (Windows OK - games crash if set any higher)
FSB = 240 MHz (Windows OK - games crash if set any higher)
CPU Multi = 12x 2400 MHz
CPU Volt = 1.400 V (max i can go to without the vcore mod)
Memory Clock = 133 MHz DDR333 (doesn't boot on DDR400)
CPU - NB Link - 800 MHz (x4)
NB - SB Link Speed - 800 MHz (x4)

edit - temps

0% CPU use - 29 to 32 degrees
70-100% CPU use - 45 to 49 degrees

Actually that's a REALLY good overclock considering the motherboard you're running ! You can TRY to push it a little bit higher. Maybe 250 HT Clock x 12. And the rest of the settings leave alone. That'd put you right to 3.0GHz . Your RAM would still be within spec (208MHz or DDR416). You can give that a go. I don't know what your RAM timings are set to, but to eliminate that as an issue try 3,3,3,8,2T.

Just my $0.02 . But it looks excellent so far! 2.8GHz+ is always a respectable overclock for a 939 chip .

forgot to add temps as well!

Idle - your taking about 29 - 33 degrees (each core)
Used - your taking about a max of 48-49 degrees (never gone above that)

241 - runs games, random crashes with no errors to desktop...
242 - runs games, more frequent crashes, with no errors...
243+ - starts freezing up on windows and random reboots...
(i am guessin the CPU is needing more juice!?)

RAM timings are all set to auto!...
i ain't got a clue with how to OC ram, thats even after reading guides!..lol

Well without knowing what your RAM is set to, sounds like you may have just reached your limits then .

Also...remember to stress test your overclock to ensure that its 100% stable. Run Orthos or OCCT for at least 12 hours. That'll tell you if its stable or not for sure .

You'll be able to take it a bit farther once you learn how to tweak the RAM. Auto settings for the most part are bad when OC'ing, but good when testing the limits of your CPU.

sometimes it just might be ur RAM that's holdin you back due to ppl oc'in with value ram, but from the way things seem im gonna believe that youre not oc'in with value ram thus tweakin ram timmings would definitely help. 3-4-4-8 1T or 2T is a very good way to start.

Even if it is value RAM...that won't hold a CPU overclock back on a socket 939. You can go all the way up to 400MHz HT Clock (FSB) before the RAM can physically be holding you back considering its DDR400 (anything). I know...my 3.0GHz runs and the suicide 3.27GHz run in my sig....ALL ON VALUE RAM.

That's a solid overclock there, and with a bad motherboard too!

The only way you'd go higher is a new motherboard, but for the price of a s939 motherboard you might as well go AM2+

It doesn't matter WHAT chips you have on the RAM. What I was saying is that there's ALWAYS a divider with 939. Which means you're promised up to AT LEAST 400 HT Clock (FSB). So yes...EVERYONE can get up to 400 HT Clock (FSB) with any RAM they want. 400 HT Clock with the 2:1 ratio will put that RAM to 200MHz or DDR400 (stock speeds).

And you are half right. RAM and CPU do matter when overclocking. However CPU speed is 10x more important than RAM speed with 939 equipment. The RAM TIMINGS actually have more of an affect than the speed does with 939 equipment. Hence why I'm still running at DDR400...even though I have DDR500. I do that because I can run tighter timings...which AMD actually benefits from.
