There is about a 200 dollar price difference between the cheapest and most expensive.
The cheapest "Highpoint" looks like it doesnt even have any memory, where some of the more expensive ones have 256mb
Do i want to stay away from highpoint?
HighPoint, Promise, and Areca are all big names in RAID.
Would you be able to provide direct links? Good RAID5 controller usually start at around $250 and go up to over $1K.
Have you check eBay as well? Try looking for "SAS Card". SAS is a superset of SATA and supports SATA drives fine. You may just need an adapter cable.
For example, here's an Intel SRCSASBB8I SAS RAID. It has a PowerPC 500MHz CPU and 256MB RAM. It usually costs $500+ but is on eBay for $50 currently. I don't know of its performance but being a discrete card, it should be better than onboard for sure.
Here's an Adaptec RAID 5085 going for $100 (usually $700). It has a dual-core
1.2GHz CPU with 512MB. http://cgi.ebay.com/ADAPTEC-ASR-5808...QQcmdZViewItemEdited by DuckieHo - 6/24/08 at 7:39am
