[hardocp] Kids Are Failing, It's All Wikipedia's Fault! - Page 6

If the teachers make a policy and enforce it fairly, there is no reason for them to be afraid of handing out a bad grade. They just need to make sure they explain to the kid why the grade was bad, so they can avoid it in the future. (Or better yet, make the policy clear up front)
Well, I don't know. Wikipedia has A LOT of good information. Whenever I forget something about Greek Mythology, I go to Wiki to jolt my memory. I took a philosophy course (Phil 480--highest non-graduate level course) and I used wikipedia a couple times and I got an A in that course. Now, I used textual sources as well, and Wiki was essentially my only source from the internet...but still...a lot of the information on the stuff I was researching was correct.

I didn't read the whole article, so if these kids are still in highschool, why the heck can't they use wikipedia if I can in college? It's not like they'll be able to understand the higher quality books anyways.

EDIT: Clicked the link and found that was the whole article...wow. If my professor gave me an F for using wikipedia, I would go ballistic. These kind of ‘scapegoat’ type things are rubbish. A lot of the wiki articles I have read were straight out of books anyways. I say blame the teachers under article 6 (ignorance) and have them teach the kids how to look at the sources at the bottom of the freaking page.

(Sorry for the rant. I plan on teaching in the future--bad teachers really get me going.)

The sad thing is, I learned more from the interwebs than I did from the required acemedia classes my highschool forced down my throat. Now, my ag mechanics and auto shop classes were highly educational, as was electronics, despite the majority of the school system's funding going to diesel and new English textbooks.

....

And when I did my research paper, my English teacher said outright "NO WIKI! It's unreliable!". To say I didn't use Wiki would be a lie...but I didn't use it for info, I used it to find sources of info.
I just shortened it for viewing purposes. The people that run your school need to be sat down--shooting them or letting them starve is your decision. Wardens--seriously? I would start a freaking riot. I don't even know where to start...

Let me ask you something, does the district allow your English teachers to cover texts such as Candide (Voltaire), A Modest Proposal (Swift), Paradise Lost (Milton), The Divine Comedy (Dante...), etc? I have heard stories where a student was reading Paradise Lost and got in confiscated. Please, say it aint so.

The post I quoted quite clearly suggested either this subject was solely about the U.S. or that Bush's educational policies affect other countries, so you are talking to the wrong person.

Oh, To hell with them.

Wikipedia is one of the most credible sources in the online community. It is maintained by the COMMUNITY. It's like the "Two heads are better than one" quote. Well, same basic idea, but is more like "Millions of heads are better than one"

No child left behind is actually one of the better things done with education.

Students now have to know things, just just get led along by the hand through tests.

Teachers, students, principles hate it, however that is because they have to now be held accountable.

NCLB is worthless. The kids are failing because they don't care about school, and put no effort in at all. You can lead a horse to water but you can't force it to drink. Staff shouldn't be held accountable. Most of the blame falls onto the parents. Discuss this with any teacher and you'll get the same story. The parents just don't care anymore.
In Progress...

its got nothing to do with credible sources, this article is a bunch of BS!
Kids know, but they are too lazy to find the right things, they just google and go with the first thing.
It's what i did in school, and it worked for me and all my friends.
So it's the teacher's fault for not specifying.

However many teachers GIVE kids the answers to tests because they don't care.

It is a two way issue. Teachers don't discipline children, and neither do parents, and neither are about to do anything about it. At my school, the only way a kid could be held back was if the parent specifically asked them to be.

A child I saw makes like he is c ocking a shotgun, points "it" at a classmate and says "BANG" and says "your dead" all in a cold scary tone and look. What does his handler "Aid" do?

Nothing at all.

Kids are way too coddled these days, and it really makes me sick, if they don't want to do homework, they don't have to, parents don't make them, and the teachers don't care and don't mark them off for not doing it.
