[hardocp] Kids Are Failing, It's All Wikipedia's Fault! - Page 7

I took a philosophy course (Phil 480--highest non-graduate level course) and I used wikipedia a couple times and I got an A in that course. Now, I used textual sources as well, and Wiki was essentially my only source from the internet...but still...a lot of the information on the stuff I was researching was correct.

I didn't read the whole article, so if these kids are still in highschool, why the heck can't they use wikipedia if I can in college? It's not like they'll be able to understand the higher quality books anyways.

EDIT: Clicked the link and found that was the whole article...wow. If my professor gave me an F for using wikipedia, I would go ballistic. These kind of ‘scapegoat’ type things are rubbish. A lot of the wiki articles I have read were straight out of books anyways. I say blame the teachers under article 6 (ignorance) and have them teach the kids how to look at the sources at the bottom of the freaking page.

(Sorry for the rant. I plan on teaching in the future--bad teachers really get me going.)

I just shortened it for viewing purposes. The people that run your school need to be sat down--shooting them or letting them starve is your decision. Wardens--seriously? I would start a freaking riot. I don't even know where to start...

Let me ask you something, does the district allow your English teachers to cover texts such as Candide (Voltaire), A Modest Proposal (Swift), Paradise Lost (Milton), The Divine Comedy (Dante...), etc? I have heard stories where a student was reading Paradise Lost and got in confiscated. Please, say it aint so.

Our textbooks had, and we covered, Paradise Lost. We had other censorable stories, too, but remember them I do not. My senior english teach was awesome in that regard. She was cool, taught us stuff, didn't bother with most of the policies the office wanted and graded fairly. Then again, we were well behaved...if the freshmen vocab book had had the word "*****rdly" in it, like ours did, there would have been a riot of immature rofling... What she taught was decided by the textbooks the school bought 8 years ago(Mine, seriously, had signout entries from fall 99, and I had it spring 08, if that's any clue as to how old these things are)

Also, I tried to incite a riot, but absolutely no students wanted to break away from being conformist sheep, so I never got that idea off the drawing board. They're afraid of going to MAP because their dumb ass used up all their previous 'punishments' with their cell phone, or they're too good to revolt against the school...or they're part of the nazi SGA helping run the joint. :\\ If I had about 200 supporters, I probably could have gotten somewhere...but I had two, and one was my cat. I call them wardens because that's exactly how they run most of the time.

"YOU CAN'T GO THERE, YOU ARE SUSPENDED ****!" "Thanks, taht's all I wanted. **** this prison!" "WATCH YOUR MOUTH, MISTER, THAT'S ANOTHER TWO DAYS!" "Good, and while yer at it, print me my diploma so I never have to come back to this ****hole!"

lol.

A good example of their idiocy is, while I'm trying to get somewhere to print my senior paper off, the lunch wardens told me I needed a principal-signed note. I told her where to shove her note, and that I'm off to pass high school, and walked off to, um, pass english 4.

It is a two way issue. Teachers don't discipline children, and neither do parents, and neither are about to do anything about it. At my school, the only way a kid could be held back was if the parent specifically asked them to be.

A child I saw makes like he is c ocking a shotgun, points "it" at a classmate and says "BANG" and says "your dead" all in a cold scary tone and look. What does his handler "Aid" do?

Nothing at all.

Kids are way too coddled these days, and it really makes me sick, if they don't want to do homework, they don't have to, parents don't make them, and the teachers don't care and don't mark them off for not doing it.

Heh, there's nothing wrong with that untill the kid has a real shotgun.

Also, they do that all through elementary and middle here, then they hit highschool where the teachers flunk them freely, and you should see the riot acts these kids try to read these teachers...OMG they spazz out so bad because they failed a class you can pass by simply coming in every day and putting on a pair of track shorts and a tee...Or, if you got my ag teacher, literally just coming in every day and not pissing him off. lol. He pwned, first day he told us "The only way you can fail my class is either pissing me off or never showing up. If you show up, lay your head down and nap you'll get a C".

People still manage to fail this class...

Reminds me of how I should have failed my freshman college orientation class because I missed the sexual harassment class; I skipped it to go skeet shooting with friends.

Skeet? You know the endangered clay pigeon that likes to inhabit cardboard boxes?

That except with a pump shotgun and birdshot.

Basically launching a very fragile clay disk between 2 and 4 inches across out about 40-60 feet and shooting at it with a shotgun loaded with birdshot (while it is in the air of course). Lots of fun, it is to practice shooting at birds, but it s heck of a lot of fun.

If it doesn't come from the dusty encyclopedia in the library, or one of the payed research "databases" then it's not TRUE!

My school librarians would have loved this.

I have spent my time in the school system, and done some teaching and behind the scenes work, and from what I have seen a lot of teachers are very lazy, and don't have the guts to let parents know what their kids are doing, or don't have the guts to fail or give poor grades to kids.
instead of blame the way society depicts how a child should be raised etc. parents and the child is the most responsible ones though.

Wikipedia is not a valid source for any research done for any topic in my school. Their first excuse (their=teachers and librarian et cetera) was that it was a bad source. I understand where they're coming from, its a wiki! Anybody can go and post!
When they went through changes like having professionals with credentials review and edit, and force the writers to cite their sources for information, and then telling the public which pages have not been moderated yet and which sentences don't have a source, I went and told the librarian that I felt we should be able to use wikipedia.
She said "It's not that we don't let you use Wikipedia because it's a bad source, but because it's too easy for you"
So we shouldn't use spellcheck because it's too easy, we shouldn't use cars because walking is more of a challenge.
What kind of bull**** excuse is that?!?
