[hardocp] Kids Are Failing, It's All Wikipedia's Fault! - Page 8

I don't know if many would agree with me, but I think the education system doesn't make you smart at all, it just matters if you do the work or not, its designed to keep you stupid. Many assignments in school will not help you at all outside of school.

I wasn't in the American education system, but the Canadian one and we were taught grammar the least (fact) and too much emphasis on Shakespeare (imo). I went to College this year and most profs were saying that the amount of grammar we are taught is pathetic, and that back in the day we were actually taught properly. Kids (including myself) in school are just lazy, but we didn't teach ourselves to be lazy. Its not just lazy teachers, the content they are told to teach sucks as well and society is another factor.

I think she is rigth. Everytimie we're given an assignment, the first thing everybody in our class ask is can we use wiki, because all you have to do is type in what you want and its there . i'm not supporting this idea but if we were to use a book we could stumble on something that we wasn't searching for but if interest you

Very true.

We are (in my area) taught mostly vocabulary words we will never see, and were never formally taught the proper paragraph system. I didn't learn about the proper 5 paragraph system till I didn't pass a college early placement test, and had to specifically ask about it.

I just wish Art was cut out, that was a load of crap. I had to do 2 semesters of some fine art, and it nearly held me back from graduating (didn't get it scheduled, and had to convince them that a class on web page design and Flash player counted).

Lastly, thinking about it more, we are just creating scapegoats by blaming the teachers or bad parents, when in reality it is the child that has to have to drive and determination to do it. I saw a lot of smart kids just not try because they thought it was useless; I agree'd with them, but realized that it just had to be done. Now I have a good job and they are scraping by on minimum wage.

To a degree it is natural selection of sorts.

Have you ever thought they thought not conforming ultimately for them is the best decision? I am not going to back to College this year, they don't teach you to make money, they teach you to work for it. If you don't want to be completely dependent on the system or what to support it the least, your obviously going to have to give up something, such as a good job or further brain washing.

I am thinking about going back to school for business, but even then I think I can be financially successful without school.

Hahaha. Understandable that you enjoy your comfort inside the matrix. Who says I will be living in the slums? But anyways this isn't about me. The number of kids failing is likely to increase unless they put in place some nazi school policies. There is too much visual media, while school isn't exactly so visual.

Or you read something that was written by a lay person with only a superficial understanding. But that's what great about Wiki, you can correct the errors. Realistically, it could be the world's best fund of knowledge if the contributors were screened and accepted/dismissed based on qualifications.

When I am on Wikipedia, I actually read much more then what I should for a project. After reading one article I will click on a highlighted word in the text and just keep going until I feel like getting the project done.
