Tuniq Tower Lapping Questions

Well, I decided that I would lap my TT due to poor performance to see if it would help any, but I'm having a few problems. When I put permanent market on the base it seems to come off within the first few swipes, so I have no clue if the damn thing is even flat. Also, I used warm soapy water to wet the sandpaper because baby oil was just too damn messy. But it seems that no matter what I use, the TT keeps getting stuck when I'm pulling it across the sandpaper.

I'm using 400 grit as of right now, but I also have 220, 800, 1000, and 1500. Right now the base of my TT looks pretty ****ty and I'm quite disappointed in what I've accomplished so far. Yes, I've read all of the guides on lapping this thing and none of them have helped, so hopefully somebody can offer some much needed guidance.

When I lapped my HS I held it upside down so I was looking at the copper plate and ran sand paper over it till it was smooth. I used the razor blade test to see if it was flat. As in, placing the blade on the surface because a razor blade is almost perfectly flat on the sharp side. I did this and it became flat and super shiny. I went up to 2000 grit.

I, like you, had a lot of trouble dragging it back and fourth across sandpaper. So I tried this way and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps!

Happy lapping!

So you didn't even wet the sandpaper, you just rubbed it on the bottom of the heatsink?

Well I finished up my lap job of both cpu and heatsink and I can't say the results are very good. My temps (@ 2.4ghz mind you) are 35/40/47/50. I honestly don't see how I could have messed up the cpu that bad considering it's the easiest thing to lap, so I'm guessing I messed up lapping my Tuniq.

I also mounted the heatsink differently this time just to see if that would make a difference, but the base of the heatsink was touching some components of my motherboard, so I didn't know if that would make it rise up just the slightest bit making it uneven on the cpu.

If I did mess up lapping the heatsink or cpu, can I not just redo it? (but hopefully do it right the next time)

Ya you can redo it you might need to get some washers to put on the screws if you take to much copper off the heatsink and cpu so everything fits tight still.

Yeah, it turns out that I just had a bad mount. So I remounted my Tuniq and added some washers on there to make it extra tight. Although my core temps didn't even out any like I hoped they would, they did drop from 65/64/60/59 to 60/58/55/54. A 5 degree drop isn't that bad I guess, I'm more then satisfied with it

There ya go. If you used AS5, give it a week or more and your temps will drop more. the AS5 takes a while to cure...

Is it better for the AS5 to break in just sitting there with the PC off or with the PC running keeping heat on the CPU?

Let it run for about 24-48hrs and then shut it down so the CPU an HSF get to room temp. Then run again for 24-48hrs and shut it down again. Some people like me will run Prime for 4-8hrs during the on time.
