SLI questions..Please help

Just wanting to confirm that we can use different brand video cards as long as the clock speeds are the same..Is that correct?. Also, is it possible to buy another card of the same model (ex. xfx 9800gtx/evga 9800gtx) that is clocked lower and overclock it to the same speed as the other and run them together in sli? Thanks guys!.

You can use different brands and clock speeds together in SLI. They only need to be the same model and I'm pretty sure that if they are different speeds, they will run at the lower clock speeds.

Yes. The latest ForceWare drivers allow pairing of cards from different manufacturers. For example, you can safely pair an XFX 8600GTS with an EVGA 8600GTS.

Yes. When using two graphics cards with differing default core and memory clocks, the faster of the two cards will lower its clocks to match the speeds of the lower card.

Chipp put my thread in the Essential reading for Nvidia fans sticky, which is right at the top of the Nvidia section.

Thanks to both of you guys for your responses. + reps for you both. One more side question in regards to the clock speeds...if I were to overclock 1 625mhz card to say 650mhz and my other card came stock at 650mhz, would they then both be running at 650 or would they downclock to 625mhz?..I know it sounds dumb but im a little ocd about computer hardware. I want to know for sure. Thanks again!

install the smaller clocked version first, OC it, then install the second card. I believe that will put it at that clock speed. I actually think it adjusts to whatever clock speed the card in the 1st slot is (i am probably wrong though)

Yes. Though you will only see one slider bar for the core and one slider bar for the memory, any alterations you make to the clock speeds of core and memory will be applied to both cards simultaneously.
I shall link you to the sticky again:

Like I said before, you can find it right at the top of the nVidia section in Essential reading for Nvidia fans. If I could staple the URL to your forehead via the internet I would, but I can't, so I link it instead.

Haha thank you. I guess my question was just a rehash of the original lol.

No problem. Be sure to refer to the thread I linked to if you have any other SLi questions. Also make sure you uninstall your Forceware drivers before you add your second card, then reinstall the drivers, and finally go into nVidia control panel to enable SLi.

This may not be related but ive always wondered, will sli be any advantage with opengl graphic apps such as Rhino3d, Sketchupl, Maya, 3dsMx???? Probably a topic for a different thread but ill take a shot.
