What is the point of DDR2 and DDR3

Sure the speed can increase from 400 - 800 - 1333, but the timings also go up, so shouldnt that cancel out the speed? What are the advantages of the newer modules of ram besides prices

A looser timing doesn't outweigh the gains from the better frequencies, thats why they keep pushing up the speeds.

Basically, you'll find that as you move up in bandwidth, it doesn't rise proportionally with latency. So when you move to higher timings, the subsequent bandwidth available through higher frequency outweighs the loss of performance through lower latencies.

That said, the difference in performance from high end DDR2 and DDR3 is negligible in terms of real world use, though it can make a difference for benching.

I think you'll really see the true unleashing of DDR3 once Nehalem hits the market.

Basically higher bandwidth, which only increases as memory speed goes up, is more beneficial than tighter timings as it allows data to flow between the RAM and processor faster. Timings only have an effect as the data is being written and read within the RAM.

Also, as the spec changes, latency and speed aren't the only thing.

I think DDR2 does 4 bits /cycle or something like that, and DDR3 increases it to 6. Not sure on the number, but it does increase in DDR3.

In addition the operating voltage decreases as well.

DDR2 spec is 1.8 volts, DDR3 is 1.5. So you actually save power.

From what I've read, the volts are lowered, yes, but power consumption is greater. Volts and watts are two different things. Correct me if I am wrong.

Volt x amp's = wattage.

However they do seem to.

As in this article.

Though they don't say how much.

This Xbit labs article does however.

As you an see, 1333 mhz DDR3 consumes a bit less power than DDR2 1066.
