"Pricing the PlayStation 3 below its production cost caused Sony to lose $2.16 billion in 2007 and $1.16 billion in 2008, the company revealed today."

Sony themselves say they are loosing money selling it below production. In 2008. Just this month.

Opps, double post :\\ Sorry...

Thats an expensive Blue-Ray player.
if prices on the ps3 drop after the blu-ray xbox 360 come out, i'll get one.....

doesn't sony still make profit off the games though?? because i thought developers had to pay royalties to sony to put the game on the console, publish, etc.

Sony makes money. Thats not the issue. This is just about the PS3.

And as far as I know, MS has no plans to add blue-ray to the 360. I looked, and found some websites on it, but no good sources.

I didn't read through the first 7 pages to see if anyone mentioned this already, but from my understanding, it seemed like Sony made the PS3 with a quasi "future-proofing" idea in mind (actually, I hate that awful term)--since the hardware in the PS3 is overkill for current games, likely it will still be fine for games maybe 5-7 years from now (and perhaps then some)--so the money they seem to be losing now might be overcome by the savings they keep in not having to develop a console in as much time? Or maybe I'm just mis-understanding things...

The ps3 in no way is over kill for games. Over kill for processing A.I and what not, yes. But in the graphics department, the ps3 is in second place with the 360 just barely above it and the wii in 3rd. The only two things sony can flaunt with the ps3 is blu-ray and processing power. The processor does not determine how pretty the game looks. That's the job of the RSX. The GPU of the 360 is in fact stronger, but only by very little.

So the Quasi future proofing sony is doing is to make sure they are a fast calculator in the future that plays HD movies. As it stands now, graphics is the 3rd thing sony had in mind when it came to the ps3.

It has also been argued that the ps3 cell is designed more for multimedia play back then gaming.

agreed!
PS3 - more Processing power - can store more, not better...
360 - edges it in the graphics dept, but not the CPU dept...

the 360 & PS3 will be replaced LONG before 5/7 years!

IF PS3 never had BlueRay:
PS3 would be the leading console on market just now with more better games and mibi cheaper than a 360?
BUT
that would have more than likley left the door open to HD-DVD!

SO what was the point of the PS3?
A console OR a ploy to corner the next High Definition DVD format?
ummmmm

That said. I would say the PS3 is the best value Blue-ray player anyway, and retract my previous statements.

But I don't see why anyone would use it for just that.
Actually the PS3 is the best blue ray player on the market as well as one of the cheapest as well. Tooo Shayyy!

While you are correct in the power, I own both, and find the colors brighter on my PS3. I judged this on Army of Two, which I have for both consoles.
It also depends on the game.
Overall, I like the PS3 more. Thats just my opinion though.
