Phenom VS Opteron

Thread Starter
Ok so my I'm building a computer for my friend and he's on a pretty tight budget, He wants a quad core and he likes AMD so I'm kinda stuck on wether to go with a Phenom 9850 or a Opteron 1354 Barcelona. The Opteron is $30 more but he multitasks and games alot. He video edits and plays games such as Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock (1600x1200) I know that the Opteron is a server chip but I'm getting a 790FX motherboard and this Opteron is a socket AM2. Is the Opteron good for gaming at all? Help would be appreciated. (No overclocking cause my friend is a wuss)

If you plan on overclocking, I would say the 9850 would be better bcuz of it higher clock speed.
If you do decide to overclock, I know that the 9850 can at least reach 3.0ghz. Not sure about the Opteron as no one has tried it yet.

The Phenom Black Edition has an unlocked multiplier = better overclocking.

I can't overclock it because he's complaing about it having a shorter lifespan if I do, so no overclocking

Blasphemy!

The 9850BE will be the better choice simply because it's clocked higher, then. If overclocking was involved, it could go either way. The 9850BE would give you the unlocked multiplier, but Opterons undergo a much stricter testing so you're going to get a much higher quality chip.

They have L1 cache...Newegg just doesn't have it listed for every processor for whatever reason.

And before anyone says anything, unless you're gaming at like 800x600, Phenoms are perfectly fine for gaming:

Tight budget? Wouldn't you be better off going with an athlon then?

Anyway, if you insist on Phenom/Opteron, I'd go with the Phenom

The Opteron 1354 has all the features of the Phenom, except for the unlocked multiplier.

They both have L1, L2, and L3 cache.
