Best mobo to OC E8400?

Thread Starter
I plan on running DDR2-1066 RAM and getting an HD 4870. This rig is a work in progress and will be assembled much later this year.

I recently decided to go with the E8400 because of its price/performance and the fact most games don't utilize four cores anyway. I also plan on overclocking my RAM to DDR2-1200 if that makes a difference.

I'm pretty sure I'm limited to the X38 and X48 chipsets.

I'm considering the Asus Maximus Formula. Every E8400 I saw listed in the 45nm info thread with this mobo overclocked to at least 4.0 GHz. Any other recommendations?

i don't see any problems getting to 4.0Ghz, although u'll need some good cooling solution for your CPU and some decent RAM.

I run the Rampage x48 Asus board and it's nice. I have my 8400 running at 3.5 with no temperature increase. The only issue is that the mobo heatsinks are real tight around the CPU so I couldn't get anything but the stock cooler on it.

Any mainstream P35 or X38,X48, P45 board as well as Nvidia 700 serie can do it.

So it comes down to if you want to run single VGA or SLI or Crossfire.

If single VGA go for P35, X38, X48, P45, single with Nvidia you loose a little performance (except for 790i Ultra) and you can also tweak your memory performance a little better with Intels chipset then with Nvidias

If SLI any of Nvidia 700 serie will do.

If Crossfire go for X48, have 2x16 PCIe.

Any GIGABYTE P35/X38/P45/X48 board. Stay away from P31/P43 boards, I heard nightmares about those.
