SLI 9800GTX with 750i ftw board or dual 4850's with x38?

Thread Starter
I'm building a new gaming rig for a friend as it is his parents gradution gift to him (they bought his sister a 1500 laptop last year so we get to go crazy this year hah)

I'm going to let him decide on the E8400 or Q6600 since thats a personal preference but i have to decide for him to go either SLI 9800GTX's or Crossfire HD4850's.

The 750i ftw board is cheaper than the good x38's which is why im looking this way considering the hd4850 is about the same price as the 9800gtx.

What do you guys think? Does the crossfire setup take more watts than the sli setup? Im considering a Xigmatek 750w modular for his build( or the 650w if he only wants the e8400)

thanks in advance

Uh, the setups you're comparing aren't even comparable, that's like saying top of the line vs. midrange budget card, and the funny part is, the budget card (4850) wins...check out Anandtech for some benches. I'm using the DFI DK X38 chipset right now, and I've gotta say I like it a lot more than anything Nvidia ever made. The CF setup will take a lot less power, too, those 9800GTX's a power hoes. That PSU will definitely work with the 4850 CF. Enjoy!

As much as I love my dual 9800GTX's, I have to say 2x 4850s & the X38/46 board. Sure it runs hotter, but it performs very nicely.

i agree.

my 9800gtx is great (dont have sli ) but 4850's are better than 9800gtx's.

and besides, some good aftermarket coolers should be coming out soon, does your friend have a birthday coming up? lol
