8800GT's in SLI or 9800GX2 Or....GTX 280..? - Page 3

post #21 of 29
If you SLI with another GT they will hold there own against the GTX and more than likely the ATI card as well, but we cant be sure as they have not been released yet. (non believers check the threads on 280GTX and 260GTX)

You can get another 8800 for about 200$ and a 750i board for 200$, final price tag about 400$, thats cheaper than these new cards, not to mention you would still have to get a motherboard...

X38 motherboard 200$ new release vid cards 400$ or more, final price $600+

You make the decision

All I want is something that can handle my resolution.(1920x1200). How would 8800GT's in SLI do?

I'm considering an upgrade to 2x 9800GX2 or 2x GTX280. Mostly because I'm planning to go from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200 pretty soon with a Dell 2408. Already having 2x 8800 GTS G92s, I can tell you that they're a pretty mean pair in SLI, and extremely good value right now. Highly recommended on a budget
Get the gx2's for that resolution. I have one now and will be grabbing a second...I dont know of a game that needs more than 1 gx2 even at 1920 (my res as well) other than crysis...and that is with my e8400 at stock 3.0. A 9800gx2 can be had at newegg for $394 after rebate..its a pny.

R700 > RV770XT CFX

R700 is a true dual-GPU card, the two GPUs communicated through the memory, effectively, they have access to the same 1GB, not the 512MB on the HD4870. Also, because they are communicating through the memory, their two 256bit interfaces, are really a single 512bit interface, not two 256bit. If they can keep the clocks up on the GDDR5, this thing will have twice the bandwidth of the HD4870 and GTX 280 while only costing $300(RV770 yeilds are over 70%) to produce.

You got yourself a QX9650 with your own money? That was worth over half my rig when I bought mine with my own money but I'm still younger than you

Now is when I wish I had a Intel chipset. People might tell me that I can get a X38 and get a 4870 and save money instead of buying a GTX 280 but then the X38 + 4870 = GTX 280 in terms of price.

What I really want to know is how the 4870x2 fares against the GTX 280. I think the maximum cores CrossfireX can have is 4 (2 of 4870x2) So my predictions performance wise are:
4870 = 0.8
GTX280 = 1
4870x2 = 1.6
3xGTX280=3
2 x 4870x2 = 3.2

(A review at Guru3D says that GTX280 trisli scales extremely well, not so sure about 4870x2 though)

SLI scales well, but CrossFireX scales better... when there is CrossFire support. It will probably come down to which games you're playing.

NVidia's TWIMTBP is going to going down the drain very soon. ATI has Blizzard's full support, so you're going to see all new games coded with CrossFireX.

I don't like the games Blizzard make coincidently... Diablo 3 and Warcraft aren't exactly any of my games.

EDIT:
According to this @ Fudzilla:
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...=8359&Itemid=1
Activision and Blizzard have decided to merge which I think gives a good probability of future Activision games being ATI sponsored which I believe includes the CoD series so ... ah crap!
