Windows XP Professional X86 or X64

Thread Starter
so i have another thread where as i asked whether or not i should get sp3 or sp2, that has been answered for me and i thank everyone for their help. Now i have yet another question. X86 or X64? I posted that quastion in my last thread but figured i may not get the answer because the title did not relate, sorry for that. My dad wants to downgrade to XP because he has programs essential to his job that do not support vista. He has an AMD X2 of some sort, so it does support x64. It currently runs Vista home premium.

I'd say 32. 64 bit XP had horrible compatibility and driver support.

Too bad that he can't keep vista, x64 version is greatness.

i have heard that also. but how bad could it be. i was a second away from purchasing x64, then i remembered that it has some glitches and bugs, it is for my dad who is not tech savvy, he just wants his stuff to work. had i gotten him x64, do you think he'd even notice the minor glitches/bugs? he has 4gb of ram also, X86 only reads up to 3 am i right? does x64 also?

The 32 bit OS will not address more than about 2.5GB of memory, 2.68 in your case, a 64 bit OS will identify all 4 GB. In that case Windows XP x64 should suit fine only problem is the driver support though.

There is nothing wrong with XP x64 driver support. If it's supported in Vista 64, it's supported in XP x64. Also you do not have to deal with driver signing crap in XP x64.

Ask all the people saying bad things about the driver support if they can provide a single example of hardware with driver support in Vista x64, but not in XP x64.

32-bit XP or 64-bit Vista.

Those are the only two options that I would even consider.

003 is dead on - I used XP x64 when it was in betas and the first few months after release to find terrible driver support. But (big surprise) when I came back to it a year or so later the vast majority of my hardware had official support and the issues I had (mainly with Nvidia) were resolved.

The unfortunate reality is that, much like what it happening with Vista, a piece of information is spread at launch that might very well be true at the time, but software is a fast-changing world and it very well could no longer apply.

Thats not to say the every product works with x64, because they don't. But, generalizations are not wise to make.

I knew you would come in here. Just go away. Infact, you want a piece of hardware that doesn't work with XP x64? My wifi card Edimax 7128g.
