Well Sony has been holding back on the new 40GB models but is going to support them soon as they have stated. The new 80GB have support but it is emulated in software so it is minimal what games will work. I would get a 20GB or 60GB original version as they had full PS2 chips in them with hardware support for games.

Oops, sorry reptilematt, I was directing the original poster to more information on his question and didn't notice your question about the 40gb model. Backwards compatibility in the 40gb model is news to me, as my 40gb doesn't have it. I haven't heard of a "new" 40gb model.

20GB, 60GB for Hardware Emulation.

80GB for Software Emulation. That said, I haven't come across one PS2 game that I own that I couldn't play on my 80GB PS3.

i am wanting a PS3 to play OLD ps1/2 games AND blueray player...

60gb PS3 - is a myth and never been available in uk...
80gb PS3 - has been discontinued and only available 2nd hand...

40gb PS3 is available now and always has been but not mentioned anything about new one supporting PS1/2 playback...
