What will be better? two 4870's or 4870x2? - Page 2

Not to mention requiring a PSU that currently doesn't exist...4x4870X2's would rape the county's transformer.

I have no problem having twin Kilowats in action for a single system!

Rofl, yeah, that's what it'll be eventually. But yes, the 4870X2 will be fine for lower resolutions, it's 4870's in CF that won't buy you anything with a resolution like that, it's just a waste of electricity.

Even without this, the interconnect will be more local so there should be less latency between the cards. Assuming they can keep the clock speeds the same, the 4870X2 could come out very slightly on top with a bigger gain if the rumors about the MC turn out tu be true. We won't really know until the NDA is lifted on the architecture details, or maybe not even until the 4870X2 launch.

Regardless, at such a low resolution, I think more than a single 4870 is overkill, and in my opinion, any dualcard/multiGPU solution is a bad idea for "future proofing" but this is going to boil down to personal preference. If that's the road you want to take, the best option would be to buy a single HD4870 and then wait to buy the second one until the price is much lower. I would be surprised to see CF yield any benefit at that resolution though until much farther down the line.

If it comes down to a contest between the HD4870 and the GTX280, an important thing to keep in mind for future proofing is that the HD4k series is showing a very small loss when enabling AA. So while the GTX280 may give higher framerates now, the 4870 could let you game at higher settings for a longer period of time game-development wise. I'm not sure to what extent this will be relevant at your resolution, however. I dare say that I think the HD4870 is a vastly more cost-effective solution because for half the price both cards are going to give you more than playable framerates.
There we go, someone who knows whats he talking about

I think I will pick up a 4870 next weekend when my paycheck comes through. They are selling the 4850's for about $240 and the 4870 are anywhere from $400 to $500 here in Japan.

I think they jacked the price up because of the reviews and market reaction, although having said that all of the GTX280 are sold out. That could also mean that shipping was limited at launch like the 4870 is now, who knows but I will try and get an under the table deal through Ark Japan in Akihabara.

Hope I can land one by next weekend, they are completely sold out here, except for that $500 one.

hmmmm
i would wait until the 4870 gets 1gb ram, so that u dont need an x2 to run at the higher resolutions. then u can get another one down the road in crossfire for a 90% scale up in performance. yes, that is how well they are currently scaling, sumtimes over 100%

Nah I think I will be cool with the 512 version that is out now for the 4870, I made my rig in the sig in 2 days, 1 day for wire management and setting up the liquid jetcoaster akak water cooling system.

It has been sitting in the corner staring at me, begging me to put in a graphics card so that I can overclock it, tweak it and treat it to some gaming. While I play on the p4 3.52 the new liquid jetcoaster sometimes asks why I have been neglecting it......

I waited 3 weeks in anguish and torment, going to buy my GPU next weekend.
