Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme, its within your $ range and is an air cooler but it is VERY good at cooling and is a top of the line cooler along with a few others. Just make sure you lap it before using so you can enjoy the 5c (+/-2c) temp drop.

Yeah, either a TRUE or a Tuniq tower. Both will give you much better temps than you're getting right now.

Read up on the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme. So far this looks ideal!
Any others close or better? How are the Zalman coolers compared to the Thermalright?

The Zalman CNPS9700 is considered equal to the TRUE but is a little more $ because of its look and well pre-lapped base. The CNPS9500 is slightly less $ than the 9700 and will carry about a 4-7c difference depending on the CPU, a CPNS9500 is a smaller 9700.

The Zalman is not in the same class IMO, the TRUE wins hands down as far as performance but Zalman HSFs do look prettier.
You may also want to consider the OCZ Vendetta 2, its pretty much matched performance with the TRUE but is cheaper and comes with a fan.
But the TRUE is still considered the best out there. Get a decent CFM fan with it like a Scythe Ultra Kaze and you're set.

The cover on the Q6600 could be bowed and not making good contact. I don't know how you are going to check this, maybe try putting a ruler to the cover and see if you can see light through it. A friend of mine has a bowed Q6600 and after a quick lap it was perfect.

Tried adding some more of the original coolant with no change, then tried some coolant a buddy of mine brought over. The green looked cool, but it still idled at 55~59.

Took out the CPU, no light shines underneath the ruler. Oh well,

Thanks for all the input guys. Probably going with the TRUE, Tuniq, or Thermalright.
