want to start playing around with htpc, where to start?

I currently have a media server, running windows xp pro. basically it just has some shares on it that i can access from any computer in my house, and it streams video to my ps3 as well. i'd like to conver this to a full media center with dvr functionality as well. the computer is currently running an x2 3600+ @ 2.5 and 2gb ram. it is running onboard video at the moment, i know i will need at least one tv tuner but what kind of video card would i need for this? and since my desktop and laptop now use ubuntu, i was thinking of installing mythbuntu on this and playing around with it. i currently have 3x320 gb hdds in it, they are all ntfs, if i switch to linux, should i reformat all of them to ext3 or just leave them as ntfs?

As far as the HDDs go, Linux should navigate NTFS fine. But only the Linux Gurus can tell you whats best overall.

Your 8600GT, check its capacity for an HTPC. If it fits the bill you could get an inexpensive 8800GT for your sig rig and kick the Folding up a lot

what makes for a good HTPC video card? i am new to this so I don't know what i'm looking for really.

i will probably keep the drives ntfs just because they all have lots of media on them already that i don't want to lose.

Good vid card...
Unsure of the 8600 series, nVidia makes so many flavors... others have used some 8600 series for HTPCs.
With ATI is a bit easier to tell, the "HD" kicks it and even the HD 2600 will do the job for most.

What is the right card... depends on your TV and its specs and whether the card can meet that need.

well my current tv is a sdtv, nothing fancy. but i want this to be able to be used for a few years and i plan on getting a nice hdtv in a few months or so.

i've been looking at mythtv and i have to make sure that all my hardware is compatible so that everything works.
