If so, please correct me.
Nehalem has hyper threading. You didn't see an octo-core chip, you saw a quad core chip that looks like 8 logical processors.

There will be 8 core Nehalems, but they will look like 16 core chips to the OS.

The new chipset has very little to do with the increased performance. In fact, now that the memory controler is on-die, chipset will have a much smaller impact than it does now.

Oh I think it can clock that high. you're right about the chips being handpicked, but don't forget the yorkfield chip they're comparing it to was handpicked as well. also, Intel is going to be releasing a 3.2ghz extreme version right off the bat despite the extra "complexity". I think these chips will overclock just as good if not better than penryn. there's no fsb limitation anymore.

Eight PCI Express 2.0 lanes equal the performance of x16 PCI Express 1.1, providing 4 GB/s upstream and 4 GB/s downstream bandwidth to and from the graphics board.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...-0,1915-5.html

either way, it's up to the motherboard manufacturers to have 4-2.0@x8 or 2-2.0@x16. they have 36 total pci-e 2.0 lanes to play with.

You are dead right but i fear that even x16 pcie 1 will bottleneck such cards as the 4870/x2 gtx 260/280/x2. I dont know why they just dont use x16 pcie 2.0 on the higher end chipsets and scale them down through the budget segments. I don't mind paying more for more bandwidth...
