[Nordic Hardware]Two 45nm Phenom X4 and an Ultra-Mobile CPU Slated for Q4 - Page 2

For starters, the upcoming graphics cards necessary to run upcoming games are being bottlenecked by the CPU. Furthermore, I design and run applications that try to solve a lot of N-prime problems, and in a lot of cases I am dealing with brute force methods or other high intensity calculations that can benefit from every clock that I can squeeze out of the CPU. I am actually looking now at porting some of these to the GPU if I can, but I am not sure how to do that yet. CUDA is not exactly easy or very developer friendly ATM.

So yeah, I do need it

Oh, and I forgot to mention my significant other does professional design work so her graphics applications eat away at the CPU cycles, RAM, and the disk.

CPU's have been the bottleneck for graphics since agp 4x (maybe even sooner). That's not a new idea that everyone is dealing with with the release of the new ati and nvidia cards.

I'm personally looking forward to the new amd phenoms, looking for a reason to update my dinosaur 6000 x2 90nm prcessor

this can be a win for AMD, Quad core CPU+4XXX mobile graphics that can play games at high settings

At lower resolutions yes CPUs are a bottleneck. But at higher resolutions with AA, AF and all the goodies chances are that your Dinosaur 6000 x2 won't do much worse than a E8400 @ 4 GHz.

AMD really went down the crap hole. I really hope I can get another 1.5 years of use out of my current rig, but I really doubt it. Bah!
AMD is saying there will be a 10-20% IPC improvement with the Shanghai/Deneb based cores. If they manage to achieve this, clock for clock they will be on par with or better than the Core2 in single-threaded performance.
