780 or X48 dilemma.

Thread Starter
Right Im in a bit of a dilemma here. I have had my rig now for about 4 months and it has nothing but disappointment. I have gone through 3 780i boards within this period and Im just getting fed up really.

I do game alot. So i need advice on what should I do. I am thinking just getting an X48 board and a GTX280 to replace my current setup. These 3 780i boards that I have had are all ASUS 2 P5N-Ts and now a Striker II. I was considering EVGA but they arent exactly without fault.

Now if you were in my position what would you do? Give 780i another chance and get an EVGA or XFX 780i board for SLi or just get rid of the 2 8800GTXs and the Striker for a GTX280 and X48 board?

Thanks for the time

A clearer thread title would have been nice.

I'm guessing that your 780 has been suffering from the hot NB issues everybody here with 7 series board has had.

Personally, I'd keep the SLI and go with Nvidia, as long as you mod your NB heatsink like some members here did. EVGA all the way.

EVGA 750i FTW.... Unles you need more than 4 sata ports Id go with it...

Many of us are very satisfied with it..

X38/48 boards are priced to account for CF, id say if anything get a good P35 board if you want get away from the nvidia chipset.. the DFI lanparty or GA p35 DS3

PS your 2 GTX's are better than a single 280GTX

Changed the title. Um At the moment yes I am experiencing the hot NB on the board but mostly because the 2 boards died on me and this striker II wont even let me OC it past 2.54GHz. Which is just a total piss take.

So are all the video corruption and issues with the reference boards dealt with? I still find that there are still people who suffer from these bugs.

Also are you talking about the fan mod for the NB? I thought the Evga and XFX have fans on them already?

thanks for the swift reply btw

X48 + 2 4870s(1GB) or one 4870X2 will beat a single GTX 280 in most gaming scenarios and yet cost the same or less(looks to be less).

Though required graphics card power is a function of screen size, I'd say that @ 19x12 or less a single 4870 will be sufficient. If that ever changes just buy a second and CF.

~$250 per GTX and ~$165 for the 780i gives you enough cash for a nice X48 board and the 4870(maybe even a little $ leftover).

I havent looked much on the ATI equivalent as to I have heard that they run quite hot and loud. Which I dont really want as my room is already like a sauna when the rig is running lol.

There are decent SLI boards. The EVGA/XFX/Zotac boards are all the same Nvidia reference design and have the same BIOS's, just pick whatever is cheapest at the time.

Cut your loss and move on. You will get it back in the hours you save from having to trouble shoot and go through the RMA process.

I'm on my 3rd board. I made many trips to Microcenter, which is 50 miles each way for me.

I will never buy another NVIDIA based motherboard again. I'm going to make time over the weekend one of these days and RMA my board. Never had so many BSOD's from a computer in my whole life time of computer use.

I think that as long as you get a multi-GPU single-card solution, the P35/45 will fit your needs perfectly...but if you want to SLI/CF, I'd say get an X38/48 and have at those 4870's, they're looking pretty sharp at this point.
