Q6600 multitasking noob questions...

Thread Starter
I'm planning on getting a q6600 very soon. Since I've never had one before, I had a few questions, some have been asked before obviously but I'm very skeptical about these things, especially when I could get something else for the price.

I figure, if I can do all of this on one computer, I might as well, and have the other computers free for my brothers and sister to use instead of converting on 1 of them and gaming on the other.

Anyways, would a Q6600 with a 8800gt 512mb be able to handle let's say:
- World of Warcraft
- A music player (WMP?)
- Converting a DVD movie to divx
- a few open browsers
- Norton antivirus (not scanning)
- Moving a large file from one drive to another, or finishing a huge download from a website.

Would it be able to do all of this without any lag in WoW, with less focus on the video card?
Would that even be enough to make it lag/stall?

Also, if it could handle something like that, how would you manage that? Can you assign certain cores to certain applications/games?

Get back to me, thanks for your input in advance.

music player doesnt take too much to run. open browsers and norton antivirus not scanning isnt even gunna put load on the CPU itself. huge dl from website is based off network not cpu so it'll lag ur WoW cuz ur lagging ur network. Moving a large file... that disk usage not really a CPU strain. WoW itself does not really use the quad. It uses a dual core much better. If i was you. i'd stick with a dual core and save some bucks since ur main goal is Gaming. As for converting a dvd movie to divx. i guess that depends on the priority that u set it on. im sure its gunna lag a little but its more on the vid card. shove it in low priority mode and it should be fine since the minimum requirements for WoW isnt even that high. nor moderate.

I doubt very much you could do that with 2 gigs of RAM.

I don't even know if my 3.5Ghz Q6600 with 8 gig of RAM could do all that, lol.

This isn't true.

I just built a system with a Q6700 and you can set Processor Affinity in the Task Manager. Right click a process, then you can de-select which cores you don't want it to run on.

For example: Last night I was stress testing with orthos which only stresses 2 cores. I opened up 2 instances, set the 1st one to run on Core 0 and Core 1, and set the 2nd one to run on Core 2 and Core 3. This way it stressed all 4 cores perfectly to 100 percent. You could do the same thing with a game. Set WOW to run on 2 cores, and set your music player to the 3rd, and so on. If I'm wrong, please correct me though.

Cool. Look for affinity then. Thanks.
If I can do that, I may lean toward a quad instead of dual-core then. Thanks for all the input so far guys.

Thanks for the +Rep! And yeah, I was having the same issue you were in picking a dual and a quad. Now that all is said and done, I am LOVING my quad. The other day I was installing crysis, downloading S.T.A.L.K.E.R, listening to youtube vids and playing Command and and Conquer 3 (MAX settings). NO slowdown. You won't regret a quad (they OC very well too).

Haha yeah, it's very easy. For anyone who needs more specific instructions just right click the process, Go to "Processor Affinity" and uncheck cores as needed.. Thanks for the +Rep!

I love the "Set Affinity" option

Makes you wonder why ppl run Duals still :-)

*edit* these setting revert everytime you close the program you set affinity to, so you need to do it each time you run it
