[Hexus] Sony going it alone with PSP-styled gaming phone?

A new phone from Sony aimed at gamers and said to incorporate elements of the Playstation Portable is rumoured to be close to an official unveiling.

Sony Corporation is currently in a joint venture with the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to make mobile phones and last week it launched its F305 gaming phone, which some analysts thought would sport elements of the Playstation branding or the PSP design.

According to Marketing Week though, an insider at the company has apparently said that the Japanese consumer electronics company would “never give its PlayStation branding†to the joint venture, describing the relationship between the two as “frosty’.

According to unnamed sources, Sony is working alone on its own PSP-style phone and insiders claim that a Christmas 2009 launch date could be on the cards.

Contrary to the rumour though, is the fact that Sony Ericsson had filed a patent for what is described as a portable mobile communications device that is 'set out to mimic the look and feel of the popular Sony Playstation Portable. Well, that's certainly not the F305.

Sony has yet to release an official comment on the rumour, but you can bet when it comes, it will be along the lines of 'no comment'.

That worries me. SE is the best cell phone manufacturer out there imo, I'd really hate to see them split. <3 my W810i.

The only way I can see a gaming phone working is if they release it alongside another handheld console and have it support the same games. Like if they released a PSP phone at the same time as the PSP. Sure it would hurt PSP sales, but it would most likely work well to create the market for gaming phones, allowing them to take advantage of it in the future.

But is it a console first or a phone first. One of the features is gonna take a performance hit. Give it full PSP features but lackluster phone capabilities, or a kick ass phone with an ok psp functionality.

There is no way they will get all the features of a PSP and the newest High tech phone gadgets in one case like that.

As for the N-gage, the ps/phone has a much better chance cause A. people like the psp already and will like the added ability of a phone, B. Sony is a bigger player then Nokia. C. Sony has market share and is expanding upon a feature one device can already do.

Besides I see a design flaw. Either they are gonna make it a touch screen or they are gonna have a tiny number pad spread around the screen its self. There is no way people are gonna like typing in numbers with a stub. Look at messaging on the 360. Unless you got the chat pad, texting on the 360 sucks in terms of speed and accuracy.

Either that or they make it really big and incorporate a slider keypad.

well if it's based on the PSP, and it comes out like the PSP but better - then it will be epic win. PSX,GBA,N64,NES games + portable + Phone = One Device (AKA - EPIC WIN)

i seriously don't think this will fly
every expensive phone coming out nowadays will be compared to the iphone, which is much more practical, and with iphone 3G itll probably be cheaper too
and often when a company tries to fuse two products together, something always get the short end

A - I can agree with that. If it wasn't a sucky phone, then the existing PSP fans would probably like the new thing very much.

B - At the time (and maybe still, I don't know), Nokia was one of the biggest players in the mobile phone space. Gaming was a new area, but they were huge in phones. Same thing in this scenario, but reversed: Sony is huge in gaming, sure; but not so much in the mobile phone space. So I can see some potential parallel pitfalls there.

C - So was Nokia...they were expanding on their existing rock-solid phone technology and adding portable game device functions. Again, I see parallels here.
