[Hexus] Sony going it alone with PSP-styled gaming phone? - Page 2

Man this would be AWESOME. I love Sony Ericsson phones, I've had four now. I love Sony game consoles, I always have, and I'm a phone junkie in general. I know what I'm saving for now!

According to unnamed sources, Sony is working alone on its own PSP-style phone and insiders claim that a Christmas 2009 launch date could be on the cards.
If they make it like the current psp that can support ps1 + ps2 games with a touch screen, built in gps, wifi, bluetooth, full internet, built in 3+mp camera, available for any cell phone company for around 250-350 or even more, than they will have the ultimate multimedia gadget.

I think SE phones are great. I get them all the time. However I am not sure how well this would work out. Not only that but I should think the RRP would be pretty bad for a device like this.

Somethings should jut be kept seperate. Phone for phone stuff and a Game console for game stuff. If you merge the two you get problems for sure whether it be price/flexibility ETC

They could do that but it would probably have a battery life of about 5 mins. Think praticaly the psp cant do ps2 graphics let alone a phone.

That probably only 10 people in the world would actually pay the 500 dollars that would cost to do that. No way it would be even close to 250-350, especially with touch screen psp. Does everyone want touch screen now that the iphone has it? Touch screen isn't a new feature. Plus if something happens to the screen you can't really use it unless the designer was smart enough to put in buttons.

At least if you have buttons you can still use the phone to answer and make phone calls, if you know the number by heart.

To the contrary, I think it's very practical. The PSP's processor is much more powerful than a phone (did you think the average phone is more powerful than a PS2? O_o), YET it is very power efficient. Have you ever left a PSP on sleep mode? Leave there for 24 hours, and it drains less than 1% of battery power. It already supports GPS, WiFi, and a camera, so Sony doesn't even need to add much to the firmware. However, it would be very expensive, the the biggest problem is the UMD drive - The drive itself is bigger than some phones.

They could always implement some sort of system where you store games on Memory Sticks or they can sell them directly on memory sticks.

I am sure they have had some advancements and maybe could pull it off. Look at how smaller the PS2 got after its update.

A touch screen would elminate the 12 key pad along with answer and short cut keys. I dont see why it would be 500+. Because the iTouch and iPhone are? They were overpriced just like all of Apple products. Look at how much it cost to make the new iPhone now.

I agree, only problem I have with my PSP is if I leave the wifi than my battery drains. Also the new PSP has skype so its almost a full blown phone.

Okay so maybe ps2 ports is asking a bit much. I could do with out the PS2 ports. Just make more PS1 ports and some better games to choose from. I read somewhere that some 3rd party company is looking into making a touch screen mod for the psp. Simple touch screen replacement and a modded firmware would be the case.

All I want is to play nice games, browse the internet (including youtube), have gps, camera, mp3/video player, text/cell phone and a very very large support for 3rd party software/apps.

I absolutely LOVE my PSP Slim.....

Now, it all depends on which way they go with it. If it's a PSP w/phone capabilities, it could be very good. A phone w/ PSP capabilities will suck IMO.

I <3 my PSP.
