Major Differences between 4870 and 4850?

Thread Starter
What are the actual differences between the 4870 and 4850? I know the gddr3/5. Is the power circuitry better on the 4870? The cores look the same on both.

I am just asking because I have already seen a thread where the volt mod has been accomplished. A pencil volt mod at that! If the 4850 is able to be volt modded and just clocked higher(I know the ram won't go as high) I will probably pick one up for 150-180 because the oc'd performance should be equal to or better than a 4870.

A really easy line to draw between the 50 and 70 is cooling...if you check out the buyer's reviews on Newegg as well as some stuff on Anandtech, it appears that the single slot cooling design on the 50 makes the card get hot, fast. Many people were complaining of their overall interior temperature rising simply due to the card. I would imagine that the hardier 2-slot design of the 70 means it will be able to handle temperatures without much of a stutter.

Well I didn't mean/think about the cooling because I would be putting an accelero cooler on it anyways. The cores looked the same I am just worried about the power circuitry really. I don't wanna buy a card in hopes of a high overclocking and then find out the components simply can't hold up lol.

Take away that, sure, the only REAL difference (but it does matter naturally, ATI was the first to make one) is the GDDR5. I'm not even really sure how to paraphrase circuitry for a video card, so I'll just give you a link. If you look here http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341 you can satisfy all your electrical questions. Also, even my 3870 overclocks very well...I can hit 800/2300 easily, a 50MHz jump on each clock...simple logic would allow that a later model would do the former even more efficiently.

Yeah I just snooped around and found that one guy has already had his 4850 running crysis benches at 810 core. Looks like we found the new winner card for this round.

The cooler on the 50 seems effective enough. The fan is just set too low. A member on here cut the PWM wire and I think he idles in the min 40's rather than the mid 70's. A driver/BIOS update should fix the fan issues. Really the HD4850 seems a great buy, just wish they were that price here. Although GDDR5 should bring about a significant performance increase.

I pulled the pwm wire off mine and it idles at 40c and loads around 55c. That is pretty dang good for a single slot!

I pulled the blue wire on mine too,you don't need to cut it.But it sure is loud, can't wait for a fix or updated utilities.
