The major difference (other than coolers and the clock speeds) is the GDDR3 vs GDDR5 Memory that's on the 4850 vs the 4870.

Edit: This evening a guy hit 900mhz core on the 4850 with an accelero cooler. So it seems the power circuity on the 4850 is good enough. Thx and rep+ to the people that posted good stuff.
