Q9450 @ 3.2GHz - Safe to run 24/7?

Thread Starter
Hello, I'm yet another n00b in the forum and also with overclocking. I've never done any overclocking after my first try years ago which ended up in me immediately smoking the CPU.

Very soon I'm getting a whole new rig, which should be shown in my profile system thingie here I think. I've added all the things I know will be included, as well as any data I already have as well.

As you can see (or not), I'm getting a Q9450 and will overclock it to 3.2GHz (well, the tech guy of the shop will actually do it, not me ) on a Gigabyte GA-X48 DQ6 mobo. That's pretty much enough for me, as I don't want any extreme things. I don't want to mess too much with voltages and what not, things I don't know much about anyway. I don't ONLY play with my computer, I also need it for work, so I don't want to risk too much.

I've tried to read up on all this overclocking stuff, but there's one detail I haven't really found an answer to. Granted, I could have taken an even closer look but yeah well, work's not doing itself alone...

My question is: Is it safe to run an overclocked CPU all the time? My (still) current rig has been running 24/7 for about three years now without any problems or hardware failures, but then again, everything's stock.

The reason I ask is because I'm a BOINC user and often crunch work units when I don't use my computer actively, like for gaming. My single-core 2.0GHz Athlon 64 3200+ was kept at around 47°C with the Zalman 7x, but that's just one core at stock speeds.

So what about an overclocked Q9450 @ 3.2GHz? Could I let it run 24/7, or would that be a bad idea? I imagine the power consumption alone is already reason enough to shut my bucket off if I don't need it...

If it's within reasonable temperatures and your Vcore isn't ridiculously high sure you can run it 24/7. Might decrease the life though after a while.

The tech guy at the shop only mentioned that he will change the FSB to 1600, nothing about voltage. So I guess according to Techgage's article, it will probably be 1.30v. I actually told him I'd like to have it like in the first example, 3.2GHz stable, no other changes. I'll run CPU-Z when I have it here though and update my system specs accordingly.

But what do you mean with decreased life, se7en56? I expect to replace my graphics card next year (the 8800 GTX is still better than most 9'ers, but it is quite old already...), and the CPU will certainly be outdated in 2-3 years, so it'll have to replaced then anyway. Won't it even last that long if I let it run 24/7? :/

I think it will be safe...but watch your temp
Try to find highest clock using default vcore then raise little by little to achieve clock speed that you want
I got my X3350 running at 3,4Ghz 24/7 stable using only 1,150v vcore ... I guest Q9450 will be act same with mine
post #6 of 12
im @ 3.4 with mine for everday use with my vcore @ 1.25 in bios. Intel's specs for the vcore max is 1.3625 so anything under that you would be fine

Alright, the machine went through 24 hours of testing by the tech guy and everything seems to be fine. About to pick it up now.
