New Rig- HTPC/Main Rig

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I have just sold my sig rig for $1200 (see sig), and I would like to build a new rig. I am looking at doing a sort of HTPC rig that is powerful enough to do 1080P, Encode videos pretty quickly, do graphics editing, and high powered math processing (Im an engineering student) quickly and without a hiccup. I will be hooking this up via HDMI to my 42" 1080P HDTV. I am wondering if I should build an AMD/ATI or Intel/Nvidia build, or some sort of combination of both. I have always liked Intel/Nvidia, but I am open to suggestions. Here is my first option, I would like some feedback, maybe some other ideas. I already have the Keyboard/Mouse, Speakers (logitech 5.1), and Monitor I will be using. I do not play any video games on my computer, nor do I plan on it in the future.

Option 1: AMD/ATI Micro ATX rig-
CASE:
Antec New Solution MicroATX Case

CD BURNER:
Samsung SATA drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151153

HARD DRIVES:
2x 640GB (RAID-0 or RAID-1) Western Digital Caviar SE16 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

MOTHERBOARD:
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128090

RAM:
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166

PROCESSOR:
AMD PHENOM 9750
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103250

HTPC CARD:
Hauppuage WinTV-HVR 1800 MCE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116015

Power Supply:
OCZ EvoStream OCZ720EVOSLI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341005

TOTAL: 971.92

Is that case worthwile? Would it be more worthwhile to make a 45 nm intel build (e8400)? Should I get a dedicated graphics card?

REMEMBER: This is going to be my everyday computer, not just an HTPC. So if you are going to say this is overpowered, please contimplate using it for all your everyday tasks.

Please make tons of comments!

PS: Im also wondering if this is worth adding for $110:

I would recommend a modular PSUs instead like the $85 Corsair 520HX: http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-520w...203270716.html

For the processing power needed, I would go with an overclocked Intel quad and a $25 HD3450 video card instead. G45 chipset would be an option for intergrated video but that won't be out for a few months. The NVIDA 8200 motherboards are AMD only last I checked (for now).

Duckie- That PS is modular, is there any other reason you would recommend the one you sent me a link to?

What Motherboard (Could be an ATX as well, just have to recommend me the case), and Quad Core processor would you recommend? The HD 3450 Just does not seem like it would be enough for video, would it?

The 3450 is at least on par, and I think more powerful than the integrated graphics on the 780g board you referenced earlier, so it should not hinder you at all. The card will be good enough to decode 1080p video, and with the addition of the quad core Duckie was mentioning, you ought to be able to do what you need to do.

The Cosair/Seasonic I linked you is better build quality that the OCZ/FSP PSU. I am not sure about the sound of the OCZ unit but the Corsair is very quiet.

The HD3450 can handle 1080p BluRay perfectly fine.

Alright, I will use that Power Supply, looks pretty good.

Would I get a Large performance increase if I got an ATX mobo, case and a separate video card?

The other reason I think a 3450 might not be enough is as stated @ the top, I also do graphics rendering for engineering class, and I do lots of photo video editing. That card shouldn't be enough to do that, should it?

The ATX mobo and case don't matter in performance really. You just want an Intel quad. You can probably find an overclocking mATX if you still want a small case.

I don't believe video cards support photo/video editing (yet). What graphics rendering apps? Are they GPU accelerated? If so, get the EVGA 8800GS for $80 AR. Cheap and powerful.

I use a lot of autoCAD, SolidEdge, Maple, and some Electrical Engineering apps (not TOO intensive). What microATX board would you recommend with the quad that OC's well? I would also rather spend a little more on a video card if it is going to be really good, maybe an 8800GT or a 4850? Would that fit in that case?
