Quick question: Which to install first?

Thread Starter
I'm about to put together my new rig. Which should I install first? Motherboard into the case, then CPU, then PSU, then drives and cards? Or CPU onto mobo then PSU into case then mobo into case (as gigabyte sheet says)? Or CPU onto mobo, mobo into case, PSU into case? Or does it not make any difference?

Was curious if installing the CPU onto the mobo after it was in the case might put too much straight on the mobo or visa versa? Thanks!

I install CPU onto mobo and then depending on how the case is made either PSU/Drives first or Mobo first.

I would install the cpu first before putting it into the case then the rest, just depends, it really doesn't matter unless something will be obstructing the installation of another part.

cpu into mobo, then i put psu into my case, then put the mobo in, then peripheral cards.

Mine's slightly different, because i have a mobo tray, but that's how I did it before i had a new case

Hi.

Another factor to consider is the ease (or lack thereof) of installing the CPU cooler. You may want to socket the cpu and then install the cooler before installing the mobo into the case.

Note that in some smaller cases and with larger coolers this may not be possible with out losing some flesh....

For the most part, the HDD's and the Optical drive installation will not be hindered by the presence of a previously installed mobo.....

You should always put the cpu in the mobo before putting it in the case. I usually get the RAM in there too. Once the mobo is screwed down, I put the rest of the stuff into the case.

Thanks for the quick response guys! Now to hijack my own thread

I just got a Cooler Master (CM690) 690 and a GA-EP35-DS3L (sale as P35) and Im a little confused about the fan pins. All the fans have a 3-pin to modular (4 pin) converter on it, but I also have a Sysfan1 mobo connector (3pin), sysfan2 mobo connector (4pin) and a pwrfan mobo connector. Should my case fans be connected to these? Or is there a fan Im missing for system fan. Thanks.

Hi again.

You really dont have to use any of the mobo header pins for the fans.

It can be helpful for monitoring and controlling fan speeds, but you could also run fans off of a fan controller, or directly to a 4-pin molex (an adapter may be required)....

What is a fan controller? Is that an additional piece of hardware?

Yes, the fan controller is a seperate piece of hardware.

Sunbeam makes a couple of nice units, as does Zalman.

If you are now considering a fan contoller, please bear in mind that not all fan controllers are equal in perfomance.
