Q6600 Max Fsb???

Thread Starter
Hey fellas.. im my new rig i will be running a Q6600 which i will definately overclock.. and i want to be able to run a 1:1 ratio with the RAM.. now im not sure what speed ram i should get to match the OC'd FSB of the processor..

im looking to achieve 3.6ghz (3600/9 X 4=1600) minimum which would require 1600mhz of ram in order to run 1:1.. would there be any point in going 1800mhz or even 2000mhz? would the FSB of the CPU match?

make sure its sli ready... i made that mistake already....

make sure you have a G0 revision. they are better at overclocking.

I understand that.. 790i ultra requries Sli ready memory if its going to be anything above 1333mhz.. but that didnt really answer my question...

Would it be worth investing extra bucks in 1800mhz or even 2000mhz.. would the FSB of the Q6600 be able to match it on a 1:1 ratio??

If you want to run at a 1:1 ratio with a FSB of 400 you only need RAM to run at 400, not 1600.

It doesnt REQUIRE SLI memory, sli ram is just a gimmick, any DDR3 memory will work..now with intel 1:1 ram/fsb ratio isnt optimal as it is with AMD..the more the frequency of the ram the better and btw that 1800 or 1600fsb is quad pumped..so its really 450/400fsb respectively..any ddr3 ram will do that..the standard DDR2 is 400fsb so id stick with what you have.

Got that right.

You don't QDR to find the Mem speed you need...just multiply the FSB by two.

O.K this can get a little confusing because there's 2 different sets of numbers.
First the Q6600 at stock runs at 266 and it's running at a 9X multi(9X266= 2400Mhz or 2.4Ghz). It's also running at 266X4=1066 or 266 QDR( Quad Data Rate) In both equations your FSB is 266. In order to run at 1:1 your RAM also needs to run at 266.
In order for you to run at 3.6 your FSB would be at 400(9X400=3600Mhz or 3.6Ghz) Your QDR would be 400X4=1600, but your RAM speed is still 400. This is a simplified explanation, you may want to read this overclocking guide for more info especially 3-6.

Im confused now.. ok.. When i overclock my Q6600 i will have to run 400mhz FSB (effectively 1600mhz because its Quad pumped) which will give me 400(fsb) X 9(cpu multiplier=3600... now if i set a 1:1 ratio FSB to Ram.. its 400mhz but still effectively 1600mhz again because its quad pumped.. so i would need to buy a 1600mhz ram kit to match FSB?

No. Just 800 - 1000. I prefer the G.Skill. It runs really well. And the price has dropped a lot in the last few months.
