I've tried to "get into" EVE several times also, but I can never stayed hooked. The latest graphics enhancement was really sweet and made me enjoy the game a bit more since the eye candy was greatly increased. However after a couple of months of mining and running missions, I got into the habit of watching my EVEMon timer and only logging in to train new skills, then logging back out. I think the reason I can't get into it is because I don't have my own little virtual character that I can customize and run around with, so that's what killed the game for me. That's just my point of view though, I know that doesn't matter to a lot of people.
As for AoC, I have a level 44 Barbarian on a PvE server. I'm not currently playing it though, but I did have a lot of fun for the first free month. The graphics are amazing, and it really helped me feel immersed in the world. Aside from a few early issues that I resolved on my own, the gameplay was really good for the first half of the game. There are a few areas that seem very unfinished, but honestly, I didn't go to those areas until I read about them on the forums. I played solo the first month and the questing didn't seem boring at all. I've heard a bunch of people say they ran out of quests around level 45 or so, but my quest log was full when I quit so I guess my experience was different.
Anyway, I took a chance and bought the game a day before launch without even reading about peoples' beta experiences. If I would have read all of the doom and gloom on the official forums, I might not have gotten the game because people exaggerate so badly it really skews your opinion of the game if you've never played it. But I took a chance on it, and I think it was a good call. The only reason I quit was because I don't have any extra cash right now to play, but once I get more scratch I think I'm going to resubscribe.
In short, if you don't mind a few early glitches or some unfinished areas, then get AoC. From level 1-20 the game is highly polished and even has voice acting, from 20-40 there's no voice acting but the world is truly amazing and HUGE, so I doubt you'd get bored. From 40-80, someone else would have to chime in because I'm only 44, and was still questing before I quit. There's also guild-run cities which I have yet to see in-person, but from the screenshots they seem really cool, kind of like SWG but AoC holds your hand more I think, but that's just what I've gathered from reading about it.Edited by Gash05 - 6/26/08 at 12:26am
