Top-Panel Beverage Cooler... Ideas?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone!

This afternoon I was mourning over the awesomeness of the Windows SideShow screen in my buddy's XPS 420 when I realized that only one thing could surpass it in pure awesomeness: A concealed top panel beverage freezer.

You have probably seen (or own) the CoolIt Chiller, and I will admit, it's pretty cool, but I want to be able to set my iced tea down on the very top of the computer, so it gets cooled magically by just sitting there! Perhaps I will do some custom etching or lay some rubber down where the drinks go, but for now I just want some ideas as to how I could get the actual "chilling" thing going.

Please submit your ideas and (if we all come to a conclusion) try it for yourselves!

I only have a few exceptions.

It must:

A. Fit in a 5.25" drive bay
B. Be moderatly quiet
and C. Be powered by molex connectors or Internal/external USB

Use an old CD ROM drive for the tray. You push the button and the tray slides out. Put the beverage on it an viola. I'm sure you could cut something up to fit in the slot for the disk to act as a coaster, say an old CD that didn't burn properly? As for the cooling part, some form of water cooling?

Interesting idea for the CD-Rom, yet I am thinking of cooling the beverage on the case, and perhaps using some freon or the like

i guess it according to your case. On my Antec 900 there's that little panley you can put your controllers, iPod, or what-not into, but as for your case I'm unsure. As for magically getting cooler you might not get that result unless you know some marvels of engineering or something like that. I'd just do the etching idea with that coolit chiller, as in place the "guts" of the coolit into you own etching and keep the USB core inside, etc. This also make me wonder, Why dont people just put a coolit on thier CPU. 45 degress all the time you'd figure, but I know that's wishful thinking.

Yes, Thermal Electric Cooling is what I am looking for and in answer to your wondering, michinmuri, a TEC CPU cooler will cost you around 150 bucks. basically, I want the "polar" opposite (excuse my pun) of a 'hot plate', mounted in the top 5.25 drive bay, that I can use my top panel as a spreader for to cool the drinkz.

You could get this http://www.xoxide.com/cool-it-usb-beverage-cooler.html
and then put it in the top 5.25" bay...cutting a hole to go to it from the top....insulate the holewith a piece of foam in the drive bay with a hole in it and put a piece of rubber weather stripping stuff atound the top and your good to go....run the USB cord down behind the front panel and plug into the front
