Budget Server Build - Page 2

Overclocking the q66 will do good things. She may be a little hot but you can get sufficient cooling for her. The Q66 is the best way to go, the new 45nm quads are better but the q66 can run multiple gameservers and ftp and all that at the same time. Most gameservers tyhat you play on are overloaded, and hence loose tickrate at certain times. Your's wont so dont worry. Also have you thought about how slow your internet is? Or are you planning on running a lan? For a case I would go with a p180 but thats just my favorite case, I guess a cm690 would be good enough.

yeah sounds good for the internet right now i have comcast high speed cable, ~1megabit, but 5 computers on a modem/router can cause a little lag and i myself am a gamer, so i think an upgrade is in order, i read that they let you upgrade to 10mpbs, and 16 mpbs, i am sort of on a budget, if you could find prices for me that would be great, do you have any suggestions? that ~40-60 a month for enough net? maybe i should get a dedicated DSL line for my server only?

My server is an Athlon XP 2200+, and as far as I'm concerned, it's a beast doing whatever I need it to do. And it cost me a small $50 for all the parts from a second hand store.

Of course, if you plan to use it as a game server, you might want a little bit more. My server can quite easily run as a CS:S server with a number of people.

I would follow version2' advice and maybe get an Athlon X2 or a nice dual core. I doubt a game server and ftp server would need quad core. My server runs great with Pentium D and 2gb of RAM.
Save your money on the parts and spend it on the nice Internet connection- maybe Verizon FIOS Business with static IP and better upload.

This is what I consider the AMD equivalent of my "server". although all it hosts is music, movies, and backup stuff (like HDD images) its good. But it depends as what you define as a server, like whether it can host a match of COD4 or not.

i want a server that can host 1, maybe 2-3 high quality servers for games like:cod4, cs, and cs:s, i figure that FTP and webhosting for my website won't be too hard for it or very performance demanding. i have decided q6600 for my processor, im going to overclock it to 3.0ghz, and find some good cooling for it, i was under the impression if i set the affinity's on the processor i can maximize performance, was i under a false impression?

such as setting 1 affinity to gameserver1
setting affinity 2 to ventrilo
affinity 3 to FTP
affinity 4 to website

am i correct or wrong? anyone have any networking ideas, and ares what's your ISP or networking bandwidth and specs, and have you hosted a gameserver on it of any type? how were the pings??

this will handle each of your games (one at a time) with ease, your limiting factor will be your connection, you dont need a quad...ftp uses no cpu, a light website (not php or sql heavily dependent uses no cpu)

don't overclock a sever, especially a game server, it could run at 95%-100% load 24/7 ... the last thing you need is system shutdowns due to heat or broken processor
