[Giz] Intel Skipping Vista - Page 4

That's a valid point that works in favour against skint jealous types and their crusade against spending money.

Infact now that I think about it I dislike XP very much.

ME is nothing like Vista ever was. ME was abandoned almost instintainiasly by MS as right off the start it was a known failure. It was a minor step to XP in the fact it was like a windows 98 version of XP and it didn't work. Not only that MS knew it was putting out XP with in a very short time of ME's release. I'm guessing just as a "test".

I think the ME to Vista comment is the most childish and ignorant thing I've yet to see. No offense to you as I've seen it before, and everytime I do it burns me due to it's ignornace.
I my self have come arround to liking Vista better than XP. After you've done all the tweaking that is needed, it is much better. Programs use more memory...but that what the memory is there for and they all run better because of it. Though SP1 basically turned it into a new OS...I didn't like it much before....though the 80 some updates would fix a lot of stuff. XP deserves some points becasue any one can install it and use it with out any problems...no tweaking needed (though tweaks make it much better). If you don't tweak Vista it will be a pile of garbage.

However, I have found a lot of software that will not run well or not at all on Vista, but then most of the software would be rather buggy on XP as well. Hardware drivers have probally been my biggest challenge, but that is mainly because I have an old printer, a Cannon scanner and a Creative sound card. So I was sort of expecting that.

I work at one of the largest medical facilities in the United States. There will not be any Vista machines on our network...ever. Mainly because almost none of our software will work on Vista, but on top of that...there is nothing to gain from using Vista. The company would have to upgrade a couple billion dollars worth of hardware just to use it since the majority of work stations only have 512MB of memory plus the cost of Vista it self. Vista is slightly more secure then XP as far as security goes...but not enough. Network hardware and firewalls matter most in that area any way. So I am betting that a majority of companies will be skipping Vista as well. Heck, there are enough still using using windows NT so that any networking class will still devote time to teaching Windows NT and 2000 stuff.

Sigh, Windows 7 will not be out in 2010. Microsoft always gets the launch date wrong by a year or two. And where will you be then? Using Windows XP after it's like a decade old? Yeah good luck with that.

Why the hell does Vista need tweaking? what's wrong with it on it's own? All the "tweaking" I need do is install Firefox, Winamp, xFire, Rivatuner and my games. Oh, and turn off UAC and the security alerts.

It uses lots of memory? Good, that's what memory is ****ing there for. Vista also makes great use of the pagefile (for a change) so when you run a RAM intensive operation, unneeded processes are dumped ot the PF until you exit them (say, Crysis which takes 1900 of my 2048 memory)

XP will probably be the majority after another couple years. People are scared of change. Unless their computer dies, they will keep XP. With moore's law.... All of our computers will be 2x as fast now by the time it comes out. Just think of your computer doing everything at half its speed ... kinda makes me wana cry. Thats what its gona be like. But then again think of your computer 2x as fast. Well, i minimized firefox... instant, start button instant, clicked on my computer... took 4 seconds... closed it and did it again, instant. Then this time opend up C drive.. not even a second. (This is my laptop by the way... 2ghz duel core amd with 896mb ram how 896 i dono. 512+256+128 ??? or 1024-128 with XP)

The computers do not need to be replaced if they are running the applications great now. Most computers tend to be bottom of the line stuff. Just a cheap computer that can use word and an internet browser. Then you go up a knotch after calling up the IT department if you need a more powerful computer because something like SolidWorks or Autocad is running slow.

That hospital will have its computers mainly for inputing the patients info. Does not take much to do that. You opening up the application wont be as fast. You booting up wont be as fast, but is that worth spending another $400-500 ???

So, My computer running 2x as fast... well, i could have saved 3 seconds on a task thats common for me, if i spend a bunch of money.

You're assuming XP is the majority now (it probably is, but you'd be surprised how many folks still use 2000 or even 98.)

Also, in the Chronologic order of past OS-es, the SP's of XP do have a place. There is a vaste difference between the original XP and XP-sp2. It's effectively a different OS. Ditto with Win 98 and Win 98 SE.
