AS the OP mentioned DVD encoding Id say Q6700 is the choice

I'm guessing the game is using one or two cores while the OS is using the others. Just a guess.

To the OP, for your instance, I'd go with the Q6700. If you can find an OEM one for like $230 or less or win one on eBay for substantially less, go for it.

I recently changed my processor for my upcoming rig because I learned dual-core processors are better for gaming and that's all I intend to do. Since you want a do-it-all rig, you should go with four cores. In fact, I think getting the Q9300 might not be a bad idea. I believe it hits 3.4 GHz rather easily and will produce less heat than the Q6700. I believe it's in the same price range, too. You'll have to ask for more opinions on the Q9300 because of its 6MB L2 cache, but I don't think it would bottleneck performance too much.

even if you run a single threaded app you will see activity on at least 2 cores but running that app on same cpu just with 1 core enabled will give you the same peformance

Go q6700- if you know how to overclock at all it should hit 3.8, if not Ill help you get there. After 3.0 ghz on a core2 duo/quad with a decent video card your not gonna see that much difference in gaming. If 2-4 fps matter the game aint worth playing anyways. ALLEN
