Question about AMD & Intel chip comparison..

Ok, I first want to start this by saying, I honestly know nothing about AMD cpu's anymore, I havent built one since a 2500+ years ago.

I'm looking for a cheap(under $100) AM2 processor for my friends system. I'm basically trying to get something comparable, but cheaper than a core2duo build. The ones I've been looking at are:

4850e - $87 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103255

5000+ Black Ed - $82 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103194

5400+ - $87 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103235

Any idea if any of these might be close to a core2duo E4600 or E7200? Or which of these might be best to go with?

It all depends. Are you buying a motherboard too? If so, a Core 2 Duo build would be your best bang per buck .

Also it depends on what the machine will be used for. For example, an HTPC build would be best suited with an AMD 45w CPU with a 780g chipset. While a standard desktop build would be better off going with a nice C2D and whichever chipset floats your fancy (P35, P45, 750i, 780i, etc.).

It all depends on what you're going to do with it.

If you've already got a motherboard for AM2, you honestly can't go wrong with the 5000 B.E. though .
