1) My son has a PS2 slim version. He's interested in Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection. I have looked around and found out it requires a PS1 memory cartridge to save a game. I have also looked around and from other posts/reviews, its being said you need "original" SONY memory cartridges. Otherwise off brands don't work, or mis-function easily. Comments?

2) My son says the PS2 slimline has USB ports. What are they used for? He was thinking about a mouse or keyboard. This PS2 does not have internet access.

I've been recently playing some ps1 games on my old ps2, I've found that off-brand memory cards work ok. I have had one offbrand for 4 years at least that still works. But on the same note I have an off-brand ps2 memory cartridge that died after about a year. Might be best to search on ebay/internet for a name brand one

You would only need a PS1 memory card for the original Metal Gear Solid game, both metal gear solid 2 and 3 are ps2 games.
The usb ports on the ps2 are for headsets, and keyboards. Mainly only for online games like Socom, Final fantasy XI, and Everquest. And the slimline PS2 does indeed have internet access just no web browser. I beleive the slimline actually has a built in network card where the fat ps2 you have to buy one seperatly.
