Cleaning thermal paste with Ethanol Alcohol?

Hey OCN,

I got my hands on some 100% Ethanol Alcohol leftover from a lab i did from school. Would yall say itd be a good idea to use that to clean TIM, or should I just go buy some Isopropyl? Ethanol is the same alcohol as in drinking alcohol such as everclear

I think is should work, just don't drink so much that you don't have any left over

I wouldn't drink the stuff. Ethyl alcohol has to be distilled with Benzene (or some nasty process like that) to get it past 95% pure.

It won't hurt your components, it just may or may not dissolve the TIM. Give it a try!

If its just for TIM, i would say okay.
but before i started cleaning components and electrical parts with it i would do some research to make sure there isnt anything else mixed or make sure its not water based at all.... im just a little too careful when it comes to things like that.

Ethanol is classified as a primary alcohol, meaning that the carbon to which its hydroxyl group is attached has at least two hydrogen atoms attached to it as well.

Ethanol's hydroxyl causes the molecule to be slightly basic. It is however,so very slightly basic it is almost neutral, like pure water. The pH of 100% ethanol is 7.33, compared to 7.00 for pure water.

The molecular formula is
C-2,H-5,OH
Water is H-2,O
They both have hydrogen and oxygen mixed...
I would get paranoid and scuuuured
and prob buy the 100% isoprophyl alcohol, lol

people as long as it dries before you start the computer why would a small amount of water be bad

It should work.

Test it first on some random piece of aluminum/copper
