Did i buy a dodgy q6600?

Hi guys,

been a long time lurker so i decided to sign up, ive been having a problem overclocking my q6600 on a 780i mobo. This is my first OC. And i cant even get it to overclock at all!

i followed some guides online, for instance i tried using a 400fsb with a 8x multi and i up vcore to 1.425V and fsb to 1.4V, i lets me boot into windows and when i stress with prime 95 it freezes about 40 seconds into it.

ive tried countless other voltages and each setup posts but fails 40 seconds into stressing with prime 95. I even tried ntune and manually adjusting the fsb but even the slighest change crashes windows

im running at 11.88V on the the 12V rail from the bios, and for some reason my default ram timing are 5-5-5-18.

And when i reset the CMOS the cpu changes its multi and runs at 1.6ghz (267 x6) at about 1.28V

I dont know whether the mobo or the cpu is to blame. If its one or the other im a financially prepared to get a different cpu or mobo.

Essentially my goal is to get to 3.0ghz on this quad. but even ntune's "quick system tune up" which was is unstable but got me to 2.87ghz

I stressed the cpu on stock and it was stable on prime95

My specs:
q6600 G0
xfx 780i A1 v6.00 pg
2 x wd5000AAKS
xfx 8800gtx
2gb corsair xms2 twinx 6400 4-4-4-12
Thermalright ultra 120 extreme (lapped)
Corsair HX620W
windows xp 32bit sp2

Thanks in advance for all the help

does it seem like a faulty cpu, if so would it be wise to invest in something like a e8400/e8500?

I can't believe it's such common knowledge here at OCN and no one's said it yet, but the latest batch of Q6600's aren't great OC'ers like they were before...if you want that really nice quad OC you're going to have to get the Q6700, or you can drop down to an E8400 or something in that Wolfdale family and bump it up to 4.0GHz. Sorry about your luck, mate, I've been seeing a lot of this the past few days where no matter what settings are tried, the chip won't budge and the PC crashes.

Well this is risky (make sure there's some kind of protection with your BIOS so you just won't boot if there's a problem, and you can do a CMOS reset later) but you could try drastically increasing your voltages to kickstart your CPU, some people here have mentioned that's what they've had to do for those chips.

if all ur going for is 3.0ghz. leave it under 9x multiplier. even the crappy later batches of Q6600 like mine gets to 3.2ghz as long as its under 9x multi... i have the same problem u do, 400mhz 8x multi 1.49vcore = fail
