My mic stopped working this morning?

post #1 of 10

Okay, so, last night I was talking on my mic just fine.
(It's a dynex mic)
Here: http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-614-...icrophone.aspx

This morning I try it, and it just won't work.
Everything is plugged in right, so what should I be looking for?

I have Realtek v. 5.10.00.5268

I can hear out of it just fine.

Another weird thing is that now when I turn up "Mic" all the way in volume controls, I can hear a difference in what I hear, like, kind of like loud feedback as I turn up the volume for the mic.

I also tried restarting my computer. It didn't help.

I've had this mic for only 2 weeks.

Also, when I turn up my volume all the way it sounds staticy, like a radio kind of sound.

Also, when I turn up my mic volume, even when it's not plugged in, it' gives me staticy feedback, too.

Okay, so, the way I fixed the static is by turning off Mic Boost.
Here's a video of when it was making the staticy noise: http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2gxg41w&s=3

3 Possible Issues you could have.

Something somewhere is muted that should not be muted.
* Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control
* Options -> Properties
* Check every single box on every single audio input/output you have. See if something is muted that should not be muted. Make everything as high as possible.
* Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder
* Talk into mic. If you see a change in the line then your problem was that something was turned too low or muted. Remember to turn down everything before playing sound of any sort again.

If that does not work...

The Mic or the Input Source is damaged
* Take mic to second computer. Plug in mic. See if mic works.
* Get known working mic from friend.
* Plug working mic into OP computer.
* See which source is having issues.

If that does not work...

You have messed up drivers
* Reinstall Realtek drivers

Other than that I have no clue.

Yeah, I'm kind of scared to update my driver because. It's onboard, and if it doesn't work, then I won't have ANY sound D:
Also, I tried the first part, and it didn't work.

Is it possible after only a couple times taking the plug in and out that it's damaged?
This sucks.
My girlfriend's going to come over and we're going to test her mic, then she'll test mine on her computer. I really hope nothing's damaged.
I'm thinking that a setting in Realtek got changed, because I didn't check "Mic boost" so I'm wondering what else could've gotten changed?

Updating your driver is, for all practical purposes, never going to mess up any hardware and, for all practical purpose, will usually fix issues. The only times the drivers are capable of making things worse is for expensive sound cards, expensive network cards, and graphics cards. This is because the driver may not perform as well, but with onboard sound it is largely irrelevant.
You basically have to update the driver if your GF's mic works on her comp, GF's mic does not work on yours, and your mic works on your GF's comp, as that would mean it is an issue on your computer and drivers usually fix that.
Taking the plug in and out can break things, especially if it is cheap electronics. However, I would honestly recommend if you mic does not work at all and it is clearly not the computers fault to simply RMA it. If it's not old at all simply return it and get a new one.

Okay XD So, this is going to sound hilarious, but I plugged in JUST the mic to the jack, and she could hear me through it, so the jack is perfectly fine, now I guess it's just the headset. D:
Obviously something wrong with the pink one D:
