right... what I meant about marked improvement was will I see imporvement over my beloved 8800GTX. (which you may have answered and I am thinking you only wrote about the 4870...)

Is there a way to change motherboards without having to reinstall OS? (I have 2 raid 0 arrays mind you...) I have an old MOBO which might to XFIRE (p35)

Depends if your OS is OEM or Retail

If it's retail, I think all you have to do is reactivate but if it's OEM, you'll have to buy a new license :/

I'd say the 4870 now and then the 4870X2 when it comes out. The GTX 280 isn't worth the 650$ nVidia is charging for it. btw, the "BFG" of ATi is VisionTek, lifetime warrenty and all. And the neat thing about ATi drivers is that each new driver will bring big performance gains. I think Catalyst 8.8 will show the true potential of the HD48xx series.

Just one of the screenies

But yes the 4870 can be had for $299 and the 4850 can be had for $150 from newegg right now..check the deals section of this board.

The 260 and 280's? Going for $450 and $600 right? Look at the benches. The Nvidia's are not worth $300 more.
Whats the 280GTX SLI get using X8AA? 51FPS is good but that test isn't using AA, $1300 worth of cards and no AA?

well as you can see in the benchmarks, 8800 GT SLi supposedly outperform 4850 CF.

Therefore it is clear that either :

1) These tests are fake (this is deffinately not the case here) <<<< WRONG

or

2) Crysis is severely Nvidia optimized. (and maybe even SLi optimized). <<<<<< RIGHT

for overall performance within any budget over $150, it is safe to say that any ATi's 4 series will best accomodate your needs. go with what you are willing to spend.
