Building my first rig :) suggestions welcome

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. I have been a console gamer for far too long, and I have decided to lay down the controller and pick up the keyboard and mouse. Obviously, our current desktop can't run anything, and I have decided to build my own.

I have done extensive research for a week, reading forums, searching newegg, downloading mobo manuals, and I have compiled a list of components. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have read forums here and I know you guys need to see budget so here it is. I can spend anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500. This computer will only be used for gaming, but im sure as I become more involved with computers I will use it for other things.

Case: Considering NZXT Zero or Antec Twelve Hundred
PSU: Coolermaster Real Power Pro 750W (Recommended for SLI 9800GTX from nVidia website)
CPU: Intel Q6600
Fan: Zalman 9700NT (Have read good reviews, is recommended by PC gamer)
Mobo: ASUS P5N-D nForce 750i (I am considering this mobo for its price.)
Memory: Corsair Dominator 2GB(2x1GB) DDR2-800 (Dominators just look cool, I have heard they have good OC potential)
Video: 2x XFX 9800GTX Black Edition
HD: Seagate 500GB 7200rpm 32mb cache (I wanted to get two drives for raid-0, but once again I am limited due to my budget. Anyone with raptor or velociraptor in raid-0 I salute you.)

I will not be able to get a sound card right away. I have chosen Logitech X-240 2.1 speakers to start off. I have chosen a Lite-On burner. I plan on buying an OEM version of Vista Premium 64-bit.

With this system, I will have $140 in rebates and a free copy of COD4. The total cost of this system is $1,518.70 with shipping and before rebates. Based on reviews and benchmark scores this pc should run games very well for a while.

Any advice would help. Thank you for checking out my post and if you have any ideas please let me know. I will be posting more threads soon because im sure i will need help with OC'ing my components.

i would stay away from nvidia boards, since ati's 4800 series is now competitive. i'd also say that, since you don't plan on doing anything other than gaming, that a 45nm duallie will be better. so, my rec would be an e8400, asus p5q pro p45 mobo, a couple of 4850 in cf, a tuniq tower (zalman is overpriced and overrated), and a corsair psu instead of cooler master.

Personally I would go with an E8400 if its for gaming. Corsair 750 Psu. For the cpu cooler Tunig tower > Zalman. If your using Vista I suggest you get a G.Skill 2x2GB memory kit as its better and its pretty darn cheap.

I'd go with a eVGA 750i FTW, instead of the ASUS P5N-D.

i had about 1500 to spend on my sig rig, and the guys here at OC.net are awesome.
you choices look pretty solid, but...
Case - Antec 1200 is a great case but pricey, P182 or 900 could be an alternative to save cash
CPU - Id def grab an E8400, OC like champ. WAY better than my 6550 lol.
Gskill ram recommended looks good, and everything else. good luck on the build buddy

Did you just say that? P45's CF with x8/x8, an X38/48 can at least get the best of their x16 PCI-E's. Definitely get the E8400, it's the OC'ers dream, not to mention that quads aren't very useful in games at this point since nothing is truly multi-threaded for them: 2 of your cores would be sitting on their thumbs doing nothing. Definitely go and CF 4870's, it'll beat any SLI on the market for price/performance, so and getchoself a DFI DK X48, it'll get your E8400 to 4.0GHz no problem. Actually, don't listen to what you've heard. Dominators are for pricks who think they can OC. If you want to OC, and do it well, get some G.Skill 1066MHz (running it and loving it, as are many other people here at OCN). You can save yourself some money and those around you from listening to the incessant gunfire of CoD4 by just using a headset as your output device Other than that complete re-routing of you plans, have at it! Good luck with your first build!

Thanks alot for the advice guys. If I can figure out this rep thing, you all are getting rep+ for replying. I will definitely consider the E8400 and I have been researching the 4870's a little bit today. Apparently one 4870 can outperform one GTX260. I will post again when I have my build finished, or if I can't decided on a certain component. This site rocks, glad I chose to join this one.

x8 pci-e 2.0 is same as x16 pci-e 1.1, more than enough for any video card out, why waste money on an overpriced x38/48...
