Why have two hard drives? - Page 3

A better question to the OP is why NOT have more than 1?

He obviously thinks it odd to have them and I for one wish to hear the reasons behind it.

A lot of enthusiast's PC's are multi-drived as standard I think. Benefits being speed (not just RAID but simply having games on one drive, page file on another as well as the OS). Then there is the all important backup, for that reason alone I can't get by with just one disk.

I just like having plenty of room to be able to save/move/adjust files around when I need to whilst also having access to my data when I need it. My photography images alone take up huge amounts of hard drive space and I don't want to see the day when I run short of it!

Why not...my opinions:

(1) The more drives you have, the more likely one is to fail (just by statistics), so the more likely you are to lose (some) data

(2) More power consumption

(3) More heat output

(4) More noise (to an extent, depending on the drive)

(5) If you have a lot of drives, it puts a lot of strain on the controller (southbridge? someone correct me here) and you might lose some performance--but this is typically a large number of drives...not just a few.

(6) If you're like me, you become stupid and wasteful with your drives, and forget where you put that pesky 3dmark06 install file, and then have to spend an hour or so downloading it again from some slow-ass server...at which point you find it buried in one of your 5 drives...LOL

I have my games on 1 drive ~ 30% free-space.
The OS and everything else on the other ~ 75% free-space.

My gaming drive was at 10% free-space until about a week ago when I cleaned it up.

...I need the space and these are the drives I had when I assembled my current build.

I have two 320GB drives, I use one for my OS and misc. programs and the other for my games, movies/music, mission-critical programs, etc. I also have a 500GB external drive to back-up all/most of my stuff.
