actucally a ton of arctiles state sony loses around $250 for every ps3 sold. So promoting the game sales and promoting awesome games which promote buying the actual ps3 is a sort of a dead end. All i could think of is the gamer buys 20 games, money lost from ps3 cancels each other.

Sony needed to promote blu ray during the format war, ps3 helped alot so blu ray on ps3, a must. But is a the cell proccesor nessary? could they have gone with cheap cpu but mabye a better graphics unit?

So... why are they caught off-guard by their loss? After all, they decided to sell the PS3 well-below production cost. They knew this ahead of time, obviously. If one Playstation 3 costs $900 to make, and they sell it for $400, well DUURRR, what did they think was going to happen?!

K. I like my PS3 and this doesn't affect my gameplay on it whatsoever.

So I don't care.

So why did I post here?

I don't know.

Well it does because:
  • You might not remember but sony took out a hefty loan from a bank before the ps3 came out I believe it was 300 million since they were in the red when they took out that loan, the loan just pushed them further into the red as a whole
  • Less consoles sold, means less people buy games, less people buy games, less games make for the ps3. Get my drift?
  • Now that they took an even bigger lost to the tune of 3 billion dollars, they are further in the red. They can't press restart like MS can because MS is making money off the 360, games, Accessories, Games for Windows, vista, and XP.
  • Not only does MS have way more money then sony has, MS' products are bringing in more moneythen most of sony's products. I'm pretty sure sony only makes about 300-400 dollars per TV sold since they don't even make their own TVs. Where as MS can make 200-300 per vista/xp license sold. But compare the number of people who buy ONLY SONY TVs vs the number of people who buy a windows computer on a daily basisThen also count the windows mobile platform in there as well. MS is in the software business, so they don't really need anyone to help them out. Sony is in the Hardware business but they mostly design their products and have someone else build it for them. Samsung makes Sony's TVs.

    Taken from CNET
    Quote:
MCFI will start to appear in high-end Samsung TVs next year, but it is unclear at this point whether the technology will appear in Sony TVs. Samsung and Sony have a joint venture for LCD panels, but the panel itself is only one component in an LCD TV.

Samsung, Berkeley added, also continues to build up its manufacturing capacity. The Samsung-Sony joint venture currently makes LCD panels in its seventh-generation fab in Tangjeong, South Korea. The sheets of motherglass processed in this factory measure roughly 6 by 7 feet. More than 1 million panels come out of the factory per month.

So you should be worried because your PS3 may be the last one for a while until sony decides a PS4 should be made once they start makin money.

Sony isn't in the position to take a big hit like MS did with the xbox and play again. Software is more profitable then Hardware. Prime example. CS3 master edition. It costs over 1000 dollars for it. Sure a lot of money was put into to development, but once the product is made and everyone is paid off, all you gotta do is press a few million copies at what, a few pennies a disc that will give you over a grand in return EACH?

Yeah, because MS is willing to put out a cheaply made product with little or no quality control. I hope Sony recovers because at least they put quality into their products.

Regardless if it was cheap or not. MS took a hit on the XBox360 when it first launch and then they paid another billion dollars and the quality of the 360 has gone up greatly. So that cheap argument is not valid any more. Honestly why do people keep saying that? The same could be said for the ps2 and that had WAY MORE PROBLEMS THEN THE 360.

MS has more money coming in from more sources at a greater rate then sony ever will. So theoretically, if MS did in fact lose to gen with another hit like the black xbox, they still have enough cash reserves to try again where as sony doesn't.

Besides build quality gets better as the console ages.

For every sony laptop that is sold, MS makes about 100-150 dollars(bulk purchase) for the License where as sony only makes a little from the cost of the laptop.

Thread Starter
also with MS' money if they decided to make a new edition of the xbox they can afford to spit out a few million of them and it will be hard for sony if the MS console is better than the current ps3

Well I got my PS3 and I love it but then again, this is the same story with the Playstation and the PS2. Their sales sucked even though they were pretty much sold out everywhere upon release but over the years of selling units and the massive amounts of games that are sold for the system more than make up for what they don't get back in the prices of the system themselves.

This is the last generation of high end consoles. The next generation are going to adopt Nintendo's strategy with the Wii - cheap readily available hardware that at least doesn't lose them money on the production side.

The one silver lining in this for Sony is that the PS3 won them the HD non-war, which will eventually cover the money lost on the PS3.
