Almost 4GHZ on a matx board!!

Thread Starter
Im sorry for taking up a whole thread for this but im just too excited and have to share.

I was originally having some problems overclocking my cpu here is the thread

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...-q6600-oc.html

but after updating the bios I have now hit new heights!! I really wonder how high i can go

heres a screenshot!!

and a cpu validation

i just need 444 for 4ghz

Temps are getting a bit high though i havent primed it at all yet but hopefully theyll be within operable ranges, But on water thats still pretty high

voltage in bios 1.55

EDIT:

I ended up raising voltage to 1.6 in the bios or about 1.52 ish in windows and its not prime stable for more than a few minutes. If i can find a way to deal with the v droop i should be able to stabalize it at 1.55 in windows which is close to what i use for my friends 4.2 Extreme edition oc.

I also need to get a new cooler for the northbridge as its getting hot with the extra voltage and fsb.

Temps are a little high as well so im thinking about lapping the cpu.

I really want to get this thing stable at 4 =)

Stick an 80mm on the NB

Your droop is pretty bad which makes me think it's your PSU more than the board itself.

440 FSB is tough to stabilize without VTT and GTL reference voltage control.

You may want to back down to 425 and see where that gets you.

vtt is fsb voltage right? if so I have that on my mobo up to +.3volts but for gtl reference i can only adjust the ratios: .6325 .604 and etc. I was thinking the same thing for the nb fan and i do have a 500w psu i could use...but i dont no how im going to make it fit in the case. I was using it before when i had a big hsf and parts were outside of the case and i actually do think the droop wasnt as bad on the 500w.

I will post results after i return from the store today =)

A reseat is in order as well since temps are like 6C apart on the cores. May or may not lap

Im going to try a pencil mod as well if anyone has done one on a gigabyte board id apreciate if you could share how you did it

I thought i would give an update if anyone is interested

I went ahead and lapped my cpu and waterblock up to 600grit and they look completely flat even put a razor blade on both to check but idle temps havent gone down any at all =( I havent had a chance to prime it yet but i usually only see like a 10-12 C increase when running prime small fft at 3.55 so at 3.96 ill probably be around 60-65 hopefully which should be just fine.

Ive also got a fan for the northbridge now so the only thing to do is do the pencil volt mod.

Im actually researching how to do it atm and tm im going out to find a magnifiying tool so i can see the traces on the board better, After looking at the pdf documentation for the chip and other ISL6312 volt mods I already have a pretty good idea of which resister i need to pencil. Im actually thinking about just severing the connection bewteen the idroop pin from the rest of the circuitry b/c the pdf info for the chipset says that if you dont want vdroop you can just leave the connection to that pin out. Im too much of a chicken though... so il just stick to penciling lol

If i manage to do it succesfully ill try to get some good quality pics and post a tutorial for the board i have.

EDIT:

And after lapping i only used a little and i mean very little amount of as and spread it over the cpu, I even removed the lockdown hinge to get better contact between the hs and cpu so im not sure what else i can do lol at least i have a semi - shiny cpu now lol
